What is USE-2 Wire? Learn the Basics About Underground Service Entrance Cable

When you’re running power underground—whether it’s from a utility transformer to a home or out to a solar array—you need a wire that can survive the "triple threat": moisture, pressure, and heat. That is exactly where USE-2 comes in. But what do those letters actually stand for, and why is that "-2" at the end so important?

Breaking Down the Name: What is USE-2?

• U (Underground): Designed specifically to be buried.

• S (Service): Approved for use as a service entrance cable.

• E (Entrance): It’s the primary "entry" point for power into a structure.

• -2 (The 90°C Rating): This is the most important part. Standard "USE" is only rated for 75°C. USE-2 is rated for 90°C in both wet and dry conditions.

USE-2 vs. RHH/RHW-2

You will often see wire triple-rated as USE-2/RHH/RHW-2.

• USE-2 allows it to be buried outside.

• RHH/RHW-2 allows it to be pulled into a building through conduit for general wiring.

• Having all these ratings means you can use the same wire for the whole run without changing materials at the wall.
