TYPE W PORTABLE POWER CABLE (2kV)

Type W is an industrial-grade, heavy-duty portable power cable designed for applications that require high-amperage current and extreme durability. Rated for up to 2000V, Type W is built to withstand the most punishing environments, including mines, quarries, and large-scale construction sites. Unlike SOOW or other service cords, Type W does not include an integrated green ground wire; instead, it is a multi-conductor power cable designed for use in systems where the equipment is grounded by other means or where a separate ground is provided. Featuring a dual-layer jacket—typically a reinforced mold-cured Neoprene or CPE—Type W is virtually indestructible, resisting impact, abrasion, flame, and prolonged immersion in water or oil.

Installation Note: Type W cable is designed for "Extra Hard Usage." Because it is an ungrounded cable (it does not contain a dedicated green ground conductor), it must be installed in accordance with NEC Article 400 requirements for grounding and bonding. When terminating Type W in high-vibration environments, ensure you use heavy-duty compression lugs and proper strain relief connectors (such as Kellems grips) to prevent the weight of the cable from pulling on the internal terminations. Always inspect the jacket for deep cuts before each deployment, especially in mining applications where the cable is frequently dragged over sharp rocks.

Key Features
  • 2000V Heavy-Duty Rating: Built for high-voltage and high-amperage industrial power distribution.
  • Extra-Hard Usage Jacket: Features a thermoset CPE or Neoprene outer jacket that is mold-cured for maximum resistance to tearing and abrasion.
  • Superior Flexibility: Constructed with high-strand-count rope-lay copper conductors, allowing the cable to be dragged and coiled repeatedly without damage.
  • Water & Oil Immersion Rated: Specifically engineered to maintain electrical integrity even when submerged in water or exposed to harsh industrial chemicals.
  • Flame Retardant: Meets MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) flame-resistance standards for use in underground mining.
  • Extreme Temperature Range: Remains highly flexible in sub-zero temperatures (-40°C) and stable in extreme heat (up to 90°C).
  • Wide Gauge Availability: Stocked in massive sizes (from 8 AWG up to 500 MCM) to support heavy industrial machinery and temporary power grids.
Common Applications
  • Mining & Quarry Equipment: Powering shuttle cars, drills, and pumps in the high-impact environments of surface and underground mines.
  • Temporary Power Distribution: The standard "feeder" cable for large-scale outdoor events, festivals, and film sets.
  • Heavy-Duty Battery Leads: Used in large-scale energy storage systems and industrial battery banks where maximum current flow is required.
  • Crane & Hoist Power: Providing flexible, high-amperage electricity to mobile industrial lifting equipment.
  • Shore Power for Marine Vessels: Used at docks and shipyards to provide heavy-duty power to large commercial ships and barges.
  • Motor & Generator Leads: Ideal for connecting large portable generators to distribution "spider" boxes or transfer switches.
  • Industrial Welding Girders: Used as a heavy-duty supply line for large-scale multi-station welding rigs.
