SER (Service Entrance Round) features 3 or 4 individually insulated conductors bundled with a dedicated bare grounding wire, all encased in a sunlight-resistant PVC jacket. The reinforced round profile is engineered for easier pulling through conduit and neater management within tight enclosure spaces.

  • Construction: Contains multiple insulated conductors (typically black, red, and white) plus a separate, bare grounding conductor.

  • Outer Jacket: It is wrapped in a durable, sunlight-resistant, flame-retardant pvc outer jacket.

  • Shape: The conductors are cabled together, giving it a round appearance ideal for pulling through conduit and raceways.

Primary Use:

  • Sub-panel Feeders: This is the industry standard for feeding power from a main service panel to a sub-panel in a garage, workshop, or another area of the house.

  • Branch Circuits: Because it includes a dedicated, separate equipment grounding conductor, it meets the NEC requirements for circuits that require a ground path.

What is SEU Cable? (Service Entrance Unarmored)

SEU (Service Entrance Unarmored) is engineered with a flat, oval profile featuring two insulated phase conductors bundled with a concentric neutral—a web of small wires wrapped around the phase conductors—all enclosed in a sunlight-resistant PVC jacket. Designed for exterior installation, its low-profile shape allows it to lay flat against building walls when routing power from the utility meter to the main service panel

Key Characteristics:

  • Construction: Typically features two insulated conductors (for hot wires) wrapped in a concentrically applied neutral conductor made of aluminum strands.

  • Outer Jacket: Covered in a sunlight-resistant, flame-retardant pvc jacket.

  • Shape: Generally flat/oval, designed to lay neatly against building surfaces.

Primary Use:

  • Used primarily as the service entrance cable from the meter base to the main panel.

  • Crucial Note: Because the neutral conductor is wrapped around the insulated wires, it does not contain a separate, insulated grounding conductor. Therefore, it is generally not used for sub-panel feeders or branch circuits where a dedicated, insulated ground is required.
