What is UL 854?

UL 854 is the industry-wide Standard for Safety for Service-Entrance Cables. Essentially, it’s the "rulebook" that manufacturers must follow to ensure that cables used for service entrance (the connection between the utility and your main panel) are safe, reliable, and capable of handling high-voltage power distribution.

What the Standard Covers

The standard isn't a "one size fits all" stamp. It specifically governs two main categories you’ll see in the field:

• Type SE (Service Entrance): Cables designed for above-ground installation, typically used for feeders in commercial buildings or connecting the meter base to the distribution panel.

• Type USE/USE-2 (Underground Service Entrance): Cables engineered for the harshest conditions—direct burial in the earth or installation in underground ducts.

Why It Matters for Your Installation

1. Compliance: The National Electrical Code (NEC Article 338) mandates that service entrance cables must comply with UL 854. Using non-compliant cable can result in failed inspections and safety hazards.

2. Environmental Durability: Cables stamped with UL 854 have been tested for moisture resistance, mechanical strength, and (in the case of SE cables) flame retardancy.

3. Peace of Mind: It guarantees that the cable has been tested to operate at its rated voltage (600V) and temperature (typically 90°C) without insulation breakdown.

Pro-tip: Always check with your local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) or building inspector. While UL 854 is the national standard, some local jurisdictions may have additional specific requirements for service entrance conductors.

How to Check Your Cable

Always look for the UL marking on the cable jacket. If you are choosing cable for an underground run, ensure it is specifically marked USE-2 (which is tested for 90°C wet or dry environments). If you are working indoors or above ground, ensure you are using Type SE (SER/SEU).
