FIRE ALARM CABLE

Fire Alarm Cable is a specialized electrical cable essential for the reliable operation of fire detection and alarm systems. These cables are engineered with features like fire resistance and low smoke/low halogen properties to ensure signals and power continue to transmit during a fire, aiding in safe evacuation. Different types, such as FPL, FPLR, and FPLP, are designed for specific installation locations, connecting control panels to detectors and notification devices as the backbone of a building's life safety system.

FIRE ALARM CABLE

Fire alarm cable is a specialized class of power-limited signaling conductor designed to maintain the integrity of life-safety systems during emergencies. These cables serve as the nervous system for building safety, connecting fire alarm control panels (FACP) to essential devices such as smoke detectors, heat sensors, pull stations, and notification appliances like horns and strobes. Available in multiple gauges and conductor counts, fire alarm cables are categorized by their jacket’s fire-resistance: FPLP (Plenum) for use in air-handling spaces and FPLR (Riser) for vertical runs between floors. Engineered with high-purity solid copper for maximum signal reliability, these cables are built to withstand the rigors of commercial and residential safety infrastructure while ensuring every second counts.

Installation Note: Per NEC Article 760, fire alarm circuits must be kept physically separated from light and power circuits to prevent interference and accidental high-voltage contact. When installing in "plenum" spaces (such as drop ceilings used for air return), you must use FPLP-rated cable to prevent the spread of toxic smoke. Always ensure the "drain wire" on shielded versions is properly grounded at the control panel to effectively eliminate electrical noise.

Key Features
  • Shielded & Unshielded Options: Offered with aluminum foil shielding and a drain wire to protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI) in high-traffic electronic areas.
  • Plenum & Riser Rated: Fully compliant with NEC Article 760; available in FPLP for ceiling air spaces and FPLR for vertical shafts.
  • Oxygen-Free Solid Copper: Features high-conductivity solid bare copper conductors for low signal attenuation and long-distance reliability.
  • Flame-Retardant PVC Jacket: Encased in a durable, high-visibility red jacket (standard for fire safety) that meets rigorous smoke and flame tests.
  • Ripcord for Easy Stripping: Includes an integrated ripcord to allow for fast, damage-free removal of the outer jacket during termination.
  • Voltage & Temperature Ratings: Standardized for 300V applications with a temperature range typically rated up to 75°C.
  • Industry Compliance: UL listed and ETL verified to meet NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) standards.
Common Applications
  • Smoke & Heat Detection: The primary wiring for ceiling-mounted detectors in commercial office buildings and residential complexes.
  • Notification Appliance Circuits (NAC): Powering high-draw strobes, horns, and sirens used for emergency evacuation.
  • Manual Pull Stations: Reliable connection for wall-mounted emergency triggers throughout public hallways and exits.
  • Voice Evacuation Systems: Shielded versions are ideal for carrying clear audio signals for emergency mass notification.
  • Fire Sprinkler Monitoring: Connecting water-flow switches and tamper sensors to the main control panel.
  • Elevator Recall Systems: Used to signal elevator controllers to return to the ground floor during a fire event.
  • HVAC Smoke Dampers: Providing the control signal to shut off air flow and prevent smoke migration during an emergency.
