While often used interchangeably, "URD" stands for Underground Residential Distribution (typically owned by utilities), and "USE-2" is the UL designation for Underground Service Entrance cable. Our cable is dual-rated, meaning it meets the stringent UL 854 standards required for utility-grade reliability and residential service entrance applications.
Yes. This cable is specifically engineered for direct burial. It is built to withstand soil moisture, mechanical pressure, and chemical exposure without the need for additional conduit, provided the trench is prepared in accordance with local electrical codes.
No. In a triplex configuration, the two phase conductors (3/0) carry the primary power, while the neutral (1/0) is typically reduced. The neutral is sized to carry the unbalanced load of the circuit. Always refer to your project’s load calculation and NEC Article 310.15.
For 3/0-3/0-1/0 URD, the ampacity depends on the installation method:
Direct Burial: 280 Amps
In Duct/Conduit: 205 Amps
Note: Always refer to NEC 310.15 or consult a licensed electrician to verify derating requirements based on your local environment.
Yes. The XLP insulation includes a UV-inhibitor additive, making it "sunlight-resistant." This is critical for the portion of the cable that transitions from the underground trench to the service entrance equipment where it may be exposed to the elements.
We stock a full range of single conductor, duplex, triplex & quadruplex URD cables including 2 AWG URD, 1/0 URD, 2/0 URD, 4/0 URD & 750 MCM URD You can browse our complete inventory and view detailed specifications for each size in our Full Aluminum URD Collection here.
