This #2 AWG, 3-conductor cable is specifically color-coded for 480V 3-phase industrial power distribution. The Brown, Orange, and Yellow phase identification is the industry standard for 277/480V commercial and industrial power systems. It is most frequently used to feed small-to-mid-sized industrial motors, commercial rooftop units, and sub-panels where high-voltage power is required without an integrated neutral.
While #2 AWG is more flexible than larger MCM cables, pulling three separate conductors can still lead to tangling or uneven tension. Priority-Plex® factory-twists the three phases into a tight, helical bundle. This ensures that the phases stay organized from the reel to the termination point, simplifying identification in busy junction boxes. Furthermore, the twist reduces the overall surface area in contact with the conduit wall, significantly lowering pulling friction and making hand-pulls much easier for the installation crew.
In 480V systems, thermal stability and chemical resistance are critical for long-term safety. XHHW-2 insulation is made of Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), a "thermoset" material that provides significantly better thermal protection than standard PVC-based THHN. It will not melt or deform under high heat or emergency overload conditions. Additionally, XLPE is highly resistant to industrial oils, chemicals, and moisture, making it the ideal choice for the harsh conditions found in manufacturing plants, refineries, and mechanical rooms.
The allowable ampacity for #2 Aluminum is determined by the temperature rating of the equipment terminations per NEC Table 310.16. For 75°C Terminations, it is rated for 90 Amps. For 90°C Terminations, it is rated for 100 Amps. Because all three conductors in this Priority-Plex® bundle are current-carrying phases, standard NEC adjustment factors must be applied if the cable is installed in a raceway with multiple other circuits to avoid overheating.
Proper infrastructure is necessary to accommodate the diameter of #2 AWG wire while ensuring a smooth pull. To satisfy the NEC 40% fill requirement, a 1.25-inch conduit is generally the minimum recommended for a 3-conductor #2 AWG twisted pull. Always use UL-listed AL9CU mechanical or compression lugs. It is a best practice to wire-brush the 8000-series aluminum alloy and apply an antioxidant joint compound before torquing the connection to the manufacturer’s specified tension to ensure a lifetime of low-resistance performance.
