This 2/0 AWG, 3-conductor assembly is specifically color-coded for 480V 3-phase industrial power distribution. The Brown, Orange, and Yellow phase identification is the industry standard for high-voltage commercial and industrial systems (277/480V). It is most frequently used as a feeder for mid-sized industrial motor loads, commercial rooftop HVAC units, and sub-panels in facilities where a neutral is not required within the conductor bundle.
Managing heavy-gauge 2/0 conductors in a 480V industrial environment often involves long conduit runs with multiple 90-degree bends. Priority-Plex® factory-twists the three phases into a single, synchronized helical bundle. This structural arrangement ensures that the conductors move as a single unit, preventing "birdcaging" or "wedging" inside the pipe. By reducing the surface area contact with the conduit wall, the twist significantly lowers pulling friction, allowing for a faster, safer installation with less mechanical stress on the wire.
In high-voltage systems, insulation failure can lead to catastrophic phase-to-phase shorts. XHHW-2 insulation is composed of Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), a thermoset material that offers superior performance over standard PVC. It will not melt or deform under emergency overload conditions or if exposed to high ambient heat. Furthermore, XLPE provides excellent resistance to industrial oils, chemicals, and moisture, making it the ideal choice for the harsh conditions found in refineries, processing plants, and manufacturing floors.
The allowable ampacity for 2/0 Aluminum is determined by the temperature rating of your equipment terminations per NEC Table 310.16. For 75°C Terminations, it is rated for 135 Amps, and for 90°C Terminations, it is rated for 150 Amps. Because all three conductors in this Priority-Plex® bundle are current-carrying phases, standard NEC adjustment factors must be applied if the circuit is installed in a raceway with multiple other conductors to prevent excessive heat buildup.
Proper infrastructure is necessary to accommodate the diameter and weight of 2/0 AWG wire. To satisfy the NEC 40% fill requirement, a 1.5-inch or 2-inch conduit is generally required. Professional installers typically recommend a 2-inch pipe for long runs to ensure the twisted bundle passes through bends without binding. Always use UL-listed AL9CU lugs and ensure that you wire-brush the 8000-series aluminum alloy and apply an antioxidant joint compound before torquing the connection to the manufacturer’s specified tension.
