Designed for high-demand electrical systems, this Priority-Plex® twisted feeder cable provides a reliable and efficient solution for large-scale power distribution. By utilizing a factory-twisted configuration of two phase conductors and a dedicated neutral, this 2/0 AWG assembly eliminates the complexity of on-site paralleling and reel management, allowing for faster throughput and reduced physical strain during the pull.

Why Choose 2/0-3C Twisted XHHW-2 Aluminum Feeder?

This 3-conductor assembly (Black, Red, and White) is optimized for heavy residential and commercial service applications. The Priority-Plex® design ensures that the conductors stay tightly grouped, which significantly reduces the friction coefficient during conduit pulls and minimizes the overall installation footprint.

  • Priority-Plex® Design: The pre-twisted architecture prevents individual conductor separation, ensuring a uniform pull that protects the insulation integrity.

  • Phase-Specific Identification: Features distinct Black and Red phase conductors with a White neutral for immediate, code-compliant circuit identification.

  • Rugged XHHW-2 Insulation: High-grade cross-linked polyethylene (XLP) offers superior resistance to abrasion, moisture, and thermal overload.

  • Performance Aluminum Construction: Utilizes AA-8000 series aluminum alloy to deliver high ampacity with a significant weight reduction compared to traditional copper feeders.

This 2/0 AWG (pronounced "two-aught"), 3-conductor assembly is a heavy-duty feeder cable designed for high-amperage residential and commercial power distribution. It is most frequently used for 150A to 175A residential service entrances and main sub-panel feeds. The XHHW-2 rating ensures it can be installed in conduit in both wet and dry locations, making it ideal for underground service laterals or feeders in damp industrial environments.

Priority-Plex® is a specialized manufacturing process where the conductors are pre-twisted (cabled) together at the factory.

  • Labor Efficiency: By combining the three conductors into a single twisted bundle on one reel, the installer eliminates the need to set up multiple reels and manually parallel the wires during the pull.
  • Tangle-Free Pulling: The helical twist prevents "birdcaging" or the wires crossing over each other, which is a common cause of jams in conduit bends.
  • Lower Friction: The twisted geometry reduces the total surface area in contact with the conduit wall, which significantly lowers the pulling tension required compared to pulling three separate parallel wires.

At the 2/0 gauge, aluminum offers an optimal balance of high ampacity and low cost compared to copper, which would be significantly heavier and more expensive for this capacity.

  • XLPE Insulation: The conductors use Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE). Unlike standard PVC (THHN), XLPE is a thermoset material that does not melt or drip under high heat or short-circuit conditions.
  • Wet/Dry Performance: It maintains a full 90°C rating even in wet environments. This is a vital upgrade over older cables that were limited to 75°C when moisture was present.
  • 8000 Series Alloy: This cable uses modern aluminum alloy, which is more ductile and less prone to "cold flow" or loosening at terminals than the utility-grade aluminum used in decades past.

According to NEC Table 310.16, the ampacity for 2/0 Aluminum depends on the temperature rating of the equipment terminations:

  • 60°C Terminations: 115 Amps
  • 75°C Terminations: 135 Amps
  • 90°C Terminations: 150 Amps

⚠️ PRO TIP: Most modern main breakers and distribution panels are rated for 75°C. Therefore, in most commercial/industrial applications, this cable is treated as a 135 Amp feeder. However, for residential service entrance applications, NEC 310.12 may allow higher ratings (often up to 175A for a 200A service using the 83% rule) depending on the total load of the dwelling.

This assembly follows the standard 120/240V or 120/208V color code for easy identification:

  1. Black: Phase A (Hot)
  2. Red: Phase B (Hot)
  3. White: Neutral

The colors are typically embedded in the XLPE insulation or clearly striped, ensuring permanent identification that won't rub off during a difficult pull through a long conduit run.

Yes we offer XHHW-2 Aluminum Wire in a single conductor from 14 AWG to 1000 MCM in multiple colors by the foot. Shop our single conductor XHHW-2 Collection here.
