Fully annealed solid bare copper per ASTM B3 & B258.

DRAIN WIRE:
Solid 24AWG tinned copper drain wire.

ASSEMBLY:
Insulated conductors cabled together with or without shield under an overall jacket. Ripcord and sequential footage markings to facilitate installation.

CONDUCTOR COLORS:
Pair 1 - Black and Red
Pair 2 - Yellow and Green

JACKET COLOR:
Red

INSULATION:

Premium-grade, color-coded FEP.

The 18/4 Shielded FPLP NYC Approved Fire Alarm Advantage:

  • LL39 Compliance Guaranteed: Features the mandatory NYC-certified print legend to ensure your project passes DOB electrical inspections the first time.

  • 4-Conductor (2-Pair) Versatility: Ideal for wiring bi-directional communication loops or redundant addressable circuits within a single shielded jacket.

  • Active EMI/RFI Shielding: Equipped with an aluminum/polyester foil shield and tinned copper drain wire to prevent "cross-talk" and signal corruption from nearby power lines.

  • 200°C FEP Construction: High-performance Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) insulation prevents the cable from "gumming up" or shorting out during extreme heat exposure.

  • Plenum Rated (FPLP): UL-listed for air-handling spaces and high-rise plenums, allowing for a streamlined installation without the need for conduit.

Installer’s Note:

"When you’re pulling multiple addressable loops through the same riser in an NYC high-rise, the 18/4 Shielded FPLP NYC Approved Fire Alarm Cable is your best insurance against 'ghost' troubles. The Local Law 39 compliant foil shield creates an isolated environment for your data, while the 200°C FEP jacket ensures that even if one circuit is under thermal stress, your signaling integrity remains uncompromised."

New York City requires fire alarm cables to meet specific standards beyond standard NEC rules, specifically Local Law 39 (LL39) and Local Law 5. This means the cable must feature specialized insulation (like FEP or ECTFE) that is flame-retardant and low-smoke, often with a higher temperature rating (150°C to 200°C) than standard fire alarm wire.

Unshielded: Ideal for most standard notification appliance circuits (NACs) and pull stations where electromagnetic interference (EMI) is not a concern.

Shielded: Required for data communication links (SLC loops) or installations near high-voltage lines, elevator motors, or fluorescent lighting to prevent signal interference and false alarms.

18/4 NYC Approved Fire Alarm Cable is a specialized four-conductor cable used when a device requires more than just a simple "positive and negative" connection. While 18/2 is the standard for most sensors, 18/4 is the go-to choice for advanced fire safety components.

In the New York City market, 18/4 cable is specifically utilized for:

  • Dual-Voltage or Multi-Signal Devices: Some fire safety devices, such as duct detectors or certain types of smoke detectors with integrated relays, require four wires—two for the power/signal loop and two for the auxiliary relay contacts.
  • Tamper Switches: Used in sprinkler systems to monitor if a valve has been closed. The four conductors allow for both the alarm signal and the supervisory signal to run in one cable.
  • "Class A" Return Loops: In high-security NYC installations, 18/4 can be used to run the outgoing and returning wires of a circuit back to the fire alarm control panel, ensuring the system remains functional even if there is a single break in the wire.
  • Access Control Integration: Frequently used to connect fire alarm systems to door holders or electronic locks, ensuring doors automatically release during a fire emergency as per NYC code.

Important Note: Consult Your Licensed NYC Electrician
While our cables are NYC Approved and manufactured to meet Local Law 39 standards, fire alarm requirements can vary based on your specific building type, occupancy, and the latest FDNY bulletins.

NYC Approved FPLP (Plenum): Must be used in "plenum" spaces—areas used for air circulation, like above drop ceilings or under raised floors. These have a low-smoke, high-fire-resistance jacket.

NYC Approved FPLR (Riser): Used for vertical runs between floors (risers). In NYC, most commercial specs call for FPLP even in non-plenum areas for maximum safety, but check your specific building code.

The primary difference is the gauge (thickness) of the copper conductor and its ability to carry current over long distances without losing power (voltage drop).

  • 18 AWG (Thinner): Best for initiating devices like smoke detectors and pull stations that require very little power.
  • 16 AWG (Thicker): Required for notification appliances (horns and strobes) that pull more current.
  • The "NYC Rule of Thumb": While 18 AWG is lighter and easier to pull, 16 AWG is the "safer" bet for long runs in NYC high-rises to ensure that the strobe at the end of the line still flashes at full brightness. If your run is over 100-150 feet, 16 AWG is often the minimum professional recommendation to pass inspection.
