Master the complexities of high-voltage commercial wiring with this 1 AWG Priority-Plex® assembly, specifically tailored for 480V distribution. By consolidating three high-performance phase conductors into a factory-twisted unit, this cable removes the logistical friction of managing individual reels and manual wire paralleling, providing a synchronized solution that accelerates project timelines and enhances job site safety.

Why Choose 1/3C Twisted XHHW-2 Aluminum Feeder?

Pulling 1 AWG conductors through multi-bend conduits requires a cable that reduces physical resistance. The Priority-Plex® system utilizes a precision-twist architecture that prevents "bird-caging" and minimizes the surface area in contact with the raceway. This design ensures that pulling tension is distributed equally, protecting the insulation from sidewall pressure during high-stress industrial pulls.

  • High-Voltage Color Coding: Features industry-standard Brown, Orange, and Yellow conductors for immediate circuit identification in 480/277V systems, ensuring rapid and error-free termination.

  • Logistical Efficiency: Single-source payout from one reel drastically reduces setup time, equipment overhead, and the overall footprint in crowded mechanical rooms.

  • Premium XHHW-2 Shielding: The cross-linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation is engineered for maximum heat dissipation and long-term moisture resistance in both wet and dry locations.

  • Optimized Aluminum Alloy: Built with AA-8000 series aluminum to offer a lightweight, cost-effective alternative to copper without sacrificing electrical reliability.

This #1 AWG, 3-conductor cable is specifically color-coded for 480V 3-phase industrial power systems. The Brown, Orange, and Yellow phase identification is the standard for 277/480V commercial and industrial power distribution. It is most commonly used to feed mid-sized industrial equipment, commercial boiler controls, and smaller sub-panels where high-voltage power is required without an integrated neutral.

At the #1 AWG size, wire can still be prone to tangling and "birdcaging" when pulled from three separate reels into a crowded conduit. Priority-Plex® factory-twists the three phases into a single, synchronized helical bundle. This ensures that the phases stay together throughout the entire pull, making it easier to manage at junction boxes. The twist also reduces the surface area contact with the conduit interior, which lowers pulling friction and allows for a faster, one-person pull in many instances.

In high-voltage systems, the durability of the insulation is a critical safety barrier. XHHW-2 is made from Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), a "thermoset" material that provides significantly better thermal protection than standard PVC. It will not melt or deform under high heat or emergency overload conditions. Furthermore, XLPE is highly resistant to industrial chemicals, oils, and moisture, making it the ideal choice for the harsh environments found in manufacturing plants, refineries, and mechanical rooms.

The allowable ampacity for #1 Aluminum is determined by the temperature rating of the equipment terminations per NEC Table 310.16. For 75°C Terminations, it is rated for 100 Amps. For 90°C Terminations, it is rated for 115 Amps. Because all three conductors in this Priority-Plex® bundle (Brown, Orange, and Yellow) are current-carrying phases, you must follow NEC adjustment factors if the cable is installed in a raceway with multiple other circuits.

Proper infrastructure is necessary to accommodate the diameter of #1 AWG wire. To satisfy the NEC 40% fill requirement, a 1.25-inch conduit is generally the minimum recommended for a 3-conductor #1 AWG twisted pull. Always use UL-listed AL9CU mechanical or compression lugs. It is a best practice to wire-brush the 8000-series aluminum alloy and apply an antioxidant joint compound before torquing the connection to the manufacturer’s specified tension to ensure a lifetime of low-resistance performance.
