1 AWG 3-Conductor Aluminum Generator Cable with Ground and 18 AWG 9-Conductor Control Bundle is a specialized, all-in-one power and intelligence composite cable engineered for standby home generators and light commercial backup systems. Designed to streamline complex multi-conduit runs into a single pulling operation, this dual-rated line is optimized to support 17kW to 24kW generator units, supplying up to 100 Amps of continuous emergency load capacity under a maximum 600V operating threshold.

This heavy-duty hybrid asset combines raw electrical power distribution with low-voltage system logic inside a rugged, sunlight-resistant, direct-burial polyvinyl chloride (PVC) outer jacket. The power core features three robust 1 AWG compact-stranded aluminum conductors accompanied by an insulated aluminum ground. Nestled alongside this main power run is a built-in 18 AWG 9-conductor control cable wiring harness, providing the necessary paths for automated utility sensing, battery charging, and generator command intelligence without requiring a separate layout pipe.

ELECTRICAL AMPACITY & GENERATOR RUN RATINGS

Engineered to match the high-demand continuous loads of automated emergency standby equipment, this composite cable features distinct power limits based on insulation parameters and structural cooling boundaries:

  • Maximum Current Capacity (75°C Terminations): 100 AMPS

This rating complies with National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 310 parameters for Type THHN/THWN-2 aluminum conductors terminated into standard 75°C equipment lugs.

  • Power Output Handling Range: 17 kW to 24 kW

Optimized explicitly for single-phase 240V residential generator applications, providing safe mechanical and thermal headroom during cold starts and sudden utility transfer load spikes.

Key Features

  • All-In-One Unified Design: Combines heavy aluminum power conductors and a multi-conductor copper control bundle within a single outer jacket, slashing trench labor, minimizing conduit jam scenarios, and eliminating multiple pipe runs.

  • Compact-Stranded AA-8000 Aluminum Alloy: Power conductors are extruded using advanced AA-8000 series aluminum alloy, providing excellent flexibility, reduced cable weight, and highly reliable connections at standard equipment lugs.

  • Integrated 18/9C Copper Control Core: Features a dedicated 9-conductor, 18 AWG copper signaling bundle that provides smooth transmission for automated automatic transfer switch (ATS) communication, smart digital monitoring, oil pressure sensors, and float chargers.

  • Dual-Rated THHN / THWN-2 Elements: Internal power lines are insulated with tough polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and topped with a slick nylon armor skin, rated for dry environments up to 90°C and wet subterranean environments up to 75°C.

  • Direct-Burial Outer Armor Jacket: Protected by an industrial-grade, sunlight-resistant, moisture-impervious PVC outer shield. This jacket allows the cable to be run inside standard PVC conduit, heavy metal raceways, or laid directly into open underground trenches where code permits.

Common Applications

  • Automated Standby Generator Connections: Linking 17kW through 24kW residential and light industrial generators safely to their respective Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS).

  • Whole-House Backup Infrastructure: Running high-amperage backup links for estate homes, rural agricultural facilities, and critical municipal pump sites.

This composite cable is the high-capacity, cost-effective solution for mid-to-large 17kW to 24kW residential standby generators. At these power levels, a 100-amp circuit is required. While copper is an option, #1 AWG Aluminum conductors provide the necessary 100-amp capacity at a fraction of the price. This is particularly beneficial for longer runs from the generator pad to the transfer switch, allowing homeowners to invest in a larger generator without the prohibitive cost of heavy-gauge copper wiring.

Modern 20kW+ generators are sophisticated machines that do more than just provide power; they manage your home's entire energy profile.

  • Expanded Logic: The 9-conductor control bundle provides the extra wires needed for advanced "smart" features such as integrated load shedding, remote monitoring modules, and dual-ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) configurations.
  • Universal Compatibility: This 9-wire setup ensures compatibility with all major brands (Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton) that may require anywhere from 6 to 9 control leads.
  • Streamlined Pull: Housing all 13 conductors (3 power, 1 ground, 9 control) under a single jacket eliminates the "spaghetti" effect of pulling multiple individual wires through a conduit.

To satisfy NEC (National Electrical Code) safety requirements, low-voltage communication wires cannot share a raceway with high-voltage power lines unless they are rated for the highest voltage present.

  • Safe Co-Existence: Every wire in this cable—even the small 18 AWG signal wires—features 600V rated insulation.
  • Cost Savings: This specific engineering allows you to legally run your power and control signals in the same conduit or trench. Without this 600V rating on the control bundle, you would be forced to install two separate pipe systems, doubling your labor and material costs.

This cable utilizes modern 8000 Series Aluminum, which is significantly more reliable than the aluminum used in decades past.

  • Vibration Dampening: Standby generators produce constant mechanical vibration. This alloy is designed to be ductile and resilient, preventing the connections from loosening or the metal from becoming brittle over time.
  • Lightweight Handling: #1 Aluminum is much lighter than copper of an equivalent ampacity, making it far easier to pull through long conduit runs or around tight corners.
  • Stable Terminations: When paired with AL9CU rated lugs and a quality antioxidant compound, these conductors provide a cool-running, low-resistance connection for the life of the generator.

Designed for the rigors of a permanent outdoor power installation, this cable is built to endure.

  • TC-ER Rated: Often rated as Tray Cable - Exposed Run, providing the mechanical strength required for both residential and light commercial settings.
  • Resistant Outer Jacket: The PVC jacket is formulated to resist UV rays, moisture, and common yard chemicals like fertilizers.
  • Conduit Sizing: Because of the thickness of the #1 Aluminum and the 9-wire control bundle, a 1.5-inch or 2-inch conduit is generally recommended to ensure a smooth pull and proper heat dissipation per NEC fill charts.
