This heavy-duty composite cable is engineered specifically for the latest generation of large-scale residential and light commercial standby generators (typically 22kW to 26kW units). At these higher power outputs, standard generator cables lack the necessary gauge to handle the amperage. This assembly utilizes 2 AWG copper power conductors, providing a massive 115-amp capacity. This ensures that even when your 26kW generator is running at full load—powering multiple 5-ton AC units and electric appliances—the cable can handle the thermal stress without significant voltage drop.

As standby generators become more advanced, they require more communication pathways between the generator and the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS).

  • Expanded Connectivity: While smaller units use 6 control wires, many 26kW systems utilize an 18/6C or 18/9C configuration to support additional features like load shedding, remote monitoring, and complex engine diagnostics.
  • Future-Proofing: Providing 9 control conductors ensures compatibility with high-end digital controllers that require dedicated lines for Wi-Fi modules, auxiliary alarms, or dual-ATS configurations.
  • All-in-One Pull: Even with 13 total conductors (power + control), the cable remains in a single synchronized bundle, allowing for a professional installation in a single conduit run.

At the 115-amp threshold, space inside the generator’s wiring compartment and the transfer switch is often at a premium.

  • Compact Diameter: 2 AWG copper has a significantly smaller outside diameter than the 1/0 or 2/0 aluminum required to carry the same 115-amp load.
  • Superior Terminations: Copper is less prone to "cold flow" (loosening over time), which is critical for generator applications where engine vibration can stress electrical connections.
  • Efficiency: Copper’s lower resistance means less heat is generated during the long-duration runs common during extended power outages.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) generally prohibits mixing low-voltage control wires with high-voltage power lines in the same raceway. However, this cable is fully compliant because every conductor—including the 18 AWG control wires—is rated for 600V.

  • Single Raceway: You do not need to trench two separate pipes or install two separate conduits.
  • Simplified Entry: It allows for a single, clean entry point into the bottom of the generator and the ATS, reducing the number of waterproofing seals and hubs required for the job.

This cable is built to survive the harsh outdoor conditions of a generator pad.

  • TC-ER / Direct Burial: Depending on specific manufacturer listings, these cables are often rated for Tray Cable - Exposed Run (TC-ER) use or direct burial, providing maximum routing flexibility.
  • Stranded Flexibility: Unlike solid building wire, the high-strand-count copper used in this cable allows it to absorb the constant micro-vibrations of a 26kW engine without developing work-hardening or fatigue cracks in the metal.
  • Resistant Jacket: The outer sheath is designed to resist sunlight (UV), oil, and common yard chemicals, ensuring the cable’s integrity for the 20+ year lifespan of the generator.

The JP stands for Joist Pull. Certified under NEC 336.10(9) as Type TC-ER-JP, this cable has passed specialized UL laboratory testing for high structural strength and low outer-jacket friction. This means you can legally and smoothly pull this massive composite cable directly through wooden home joists and structural framing without the massive expense and labor of installing rigid conduit pipe.

Yes. The rugged, black outer PVC jacket is fully UL-approved for Direct Burial and is engineered with built-in Sunlight/UV Resistance. It is rated for 90°C wet or dry environments, allowing you to run it directly from inside a basement or utility room, drop it straight into an outdoor trench, and terminate it inside your outdoor generator enclosure or automatic transfer switch (ATS).

Wire America supplies an extensive inventory of Generator Cable cut by the foot or on master reels. We ship directly from our regional hubs located across the United States, delivering most orders right to your shop or job site within 2 to 4 business days.
