4C cable is generally required whenever a system supplies line-to-neutral loads alongside 3-phase line-to-line power, such as:

  • 3-Phase, 4-Wire Wye Systems (120/208V or 277/480V): Standard commercial distribution panels and subpanels where 120V or 277V lighting and receptacle circuits are served.

  • Subpanel Feeders: Running power from a main service panel to a commercial subpanel.

  • Mixed-Load Equipment: Large commercial machinery with internal 120V control circuits, electronics, or convenience outlets that require a neutral path.

  • EV Charging Hubs & Data Centers: Commercial multi-charger distribution hubs or server rack PDU feeders requiring balanced phase distribution with neutral returns.

2. Wiring a Subpanel Feeder with Aluminum MC Cable (NEC 250.142 )

A common point of jobsite confusion occurs when feeding subpanels from a main service entrance panel.

Under modern NEC 250.142 principles, main service panels and subpanels must maintain strict separation between the grounded neutral conductor and the equipment grounding conductor.

  • Main Service Panel: Neutral & ground conductors are bonded together at the main service origin.

  • Commercial Subpanel Feeder: Neutral & ground conductors must be strictly split. Neutral carries line-to-neutral return current, while the bare ground carries fault current only.

  • Feeder Conductor Assembly: Feeding a standard 3-phase subpanel requires 3 Phase Legs + 1 Insulated Neutral + 1 Bare Equipment Ground (4-Conductor Cable).

Because neutral current must return exclusively through an insulated neutral wire—and never through the bare equipment ground—feeding a standard 3-phase 120/208V or 277/480V subpanel generally requires a 4-Conductor MC Cable (3 Hots, 1 Neutral, 1 Ground).

  2. Outer Diameter (OD) & Tray Space: Adding a 4th insulated conductor increases the outer diameter of the interlocked armor. In tight raceways or crowded cable trays, 3C cable offers a smaller footprint and tighter bend radius.

  3. Weight & Handling: 3C cable is noticeably lighter per foot, translating to lower pulling tension on long horizontal runs.
