4/4 Aluminum MC (Metal Clad) Cable is a heavy-duty wiring assembly featuring four 4 AWG conductors plus a bare ground, primarily used for three-phase power distribution in commercial and industrial structures. Thanks to its interlocking aluminum armor jacket, it functions as its own pre-armored raceway and can be pulled through framing studs without installing individual pipe conduit. It is commonly used to feed 60-Amp or 70-Amp three-phase sub-panels, connect industrial motors, and wire massive commercial HVAC rooftop equipment.
The allowable ampacity of 4/4 Aluminum MC Cable is 65 Amps @ 75°C and 75 Amps @ 90°C.
*Ampacities are based on NEC Table 310.15(B)(16), and show the allowable Ampacities of three current carrying insulated conductors, in a raceway, cable, or earth based on ambeient temperature of 30°C (86°F).
The core difference is the number of current-carrying conductors. 4/3 MC cable features three insulated wires (typically 2 hots and 1 neutral), which is used for single-phase 240V systems. 4/4 MC cable features four insulated wires (3 hots and 1 neutral), which is specifically required to distribute three-phase power to commercial panels or heavy industrial machinery. Both configurations include an additional bare grounding wire.
No. Standard Aluminum MC cable with open, interlocked metal armor is engineered strictly for dry, indoor, concealed, or exposed installations. It cannot be buried directly in soil or embedded in concrete without a protective, fluid-tight PVC outer jacket (often designated as "Direct Burial MC" or "PVC-Jacketed MC"). For underground runs, you must use an approved underground feeder cable (like MHF or URD) or run standalone conductors through a buried conduit system.
4/4 Aluminum MC Cable has an approximate physical net weight of 408 lbs per 1,000 feet (lbs/mft). The nominal outside diameter over the external interlocking aluminum armor is 1.09 inches (+/- 5%). Knowing these dimensions allows installers to ensure they select the appropriate trade-size connector fittings and evaluate structural loading capacities for long cable tray pulls.
