"8/3 Shielded VFD Cable W/ 3 #14 Grounds is a heavy-duty, 600V TC-ER / 1000V Flexible Motor Supply rated cable engineered for Variable Frequency Drive systems. Constructed with three 8 AWG stranded tinned copper conductors, XLPE insulation, dual-layer EMI shielding (100% aluminum/Mylar/aluminum tape plus tinned copper braid), and three #14 AWG grounds, this cable provides reliable motor power and noise suppression. Its rugged, direct-burial rated PVC outer jacket resists sunlight, moisture, oil, and abrasion across temperatures ranging from -40°C to 90°C."

Key Features & Benefits: 8/3 Shielded VFD Cable W/ 3 #14 Grounds

Standard power cable breaks down rapidly under PWM voltage spikes and floods adjacent control systems with severe noise. This specialized 3-conductor VFD cable solves these jobsite failures:

  • Dual-Layer EMI/RFI Shielding: Combines a 100% coverage aluminum/Mylar/aluminum tape shield with a tinned copper braid to trap high-frequency noise and protect nearby sensors or PLCs.

  • 3 Symmetrical #14 AWG Grounds: Features three stranded tinned copper grounds evenly distributed to balance magnetic fields and provide a low-impedance path for stray currents.

  • Exposed Run (TC-ER) Rated: Complies with UL 1277 for continuous installation out of cable trays to the motor without rigid metal conduit.

  • Heavy-Duty Industrial Jacket: Sunlight, oil, moisture, and abrasion resistant black PVC jacket approved for direct burial in wet or dry environments (-40°C to 90°C).

  • Simplified Landing & Termination: The 3-conductor layout with symmetrical grounds simplifies wire routing into cramped VFD enclosures, reducing installation time and overall labor costs.

Real World Applications

Real World Applications
  • Industrial Conveyors & Material Handling Systems: Delivers reliable power to 8 AWG motor loads across automated distribution centers, sorting lines, and material handling plants. Dual-layer shielding (100% aluminum tape + tinned copper braid) prevents VFD noise from interrupting optical sensors and PLC logic.
  • Commercial & Industrial HVAC Systems: Powers high-horsepower variable frequency drive fan motors, chillers, and large cooling towers. Engineered with high-dielectric XLPE insulation, it absorbs destructive reflected wave voltage spikes to protect motor windings from insulation breakdown.
  • Municipal Water Treatment & Pumping Stations: Ideal for variable-speed booster pumps, blowers, and sludge processing equipment. Its heavy-duty PVC jacket is oil-, moisture-, and chemical-resistant, making it suitable for direct-burial runs between control buildings and outdoor drive motors.
  • Factory Automated Machinery & Robotics: Handles high-frequency switching environments in automated machinery, machine tools, and stationary tray interconnects. The 133-strand tinned copper construction provides flexibility for smooth pulls through tight cable trays and raceways.
  • Harsh Wash-Down & Outdoor Industrial Facilities: Built for food processing plants, chemical facilities, and outdoor industrial sites. Rated for wet/dry operation from -40°C to 90°C with full UV and sunlight resistance, holding up under high-pressure equipment wash-downs.

It is a heavy-duty, 600V TC-ER / 1000V Flexible Motor Supply rated cable designed to connect Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to 3-phase AC induction motors. Built with three 8 AWG stranded tinned copper phase conductors, XLPE insulation, an overall dual-layer shield (foil + tinned copper braid), and three #14 AWG symmetrical grounds, it protects equipment from PWM voltage spikes and prevents high-frequency noise from disrupting nearby control systems.

The 3-ground symmetrical architecture offers two major advantages in VFD applications:

  • Balanced Magnetic Fields: Placing three ground wires evenly around the phase conductors cancels out magnetic fields, significantly reducing common-mode voltage spikes.
  • Bearing Protection: Provides a direct, low-impedance return path for stray currents back to the drive, preventing shaft voltage buildup and motor bearing fluting.
  • No Rigid Conduit Needed: Carrying a UL 1277 Type TC-ER (Exposed Run) rating, this cable can transition directly out of overhead cable trays to motor terminal boxes without requiring rigid metal conduit.
  • Simplified Terminations: The 3-conductor design with symmetrical grounds fits standard terminal blocks cleanly. (Note: Standard EMC cable glands are still recommended to maintain $360^\circ$ shield grounding at drive enclosures).
  • Voltage Rating: 600V (UL Type TC-ER) / 1000V (UL Flexible Motor Supply Cable / WTTC).
  • Temperature Range: -40°C to 90°C (rated for both wet and dry locations).
  • Environmental & Code Ratings: Direct burial approved, sunlight/UV resistant, oil resistant, passes IEEE 1202/UL 1685 vertical tray flame tests, and is compliant for Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations per NEC guidelines.
