"6/4 Shielded VFD Cable W/ 4 #12 Drain Wires is a heavy-duty, 600V TC-ER / 1000V Flexible Motor Supply rated cable engineered for high-amperage Variable Frequency Drives. Built with XLPE insulation, dual-layer EMI/RFI shielding (aluminum tape and tinned copper braid), and four #12 AWG drain wires, it suppresses noise and controls high-voltage spikes. Its rugged, oil-resistant PVC jacket is approved for direct burial, UV exposure, and wet or dry environments."

Key Features & Benefits: 6/4 Shielded VFD Cable

Standard power wire degrades quickly under high-frequency voltage spikes and radiates severe electrical noise into nearby control lines. This specialized VFD cable eliminates system failures:

  • Dual-Layer EMI/RFI Shielding: Combines an aluminum polyester tape shield with an overall 85% tinned copper braid to trap and ground high-frequency noise before it disrupts sensors or PLCs.

  • 4 Symmetrical Drain Wires (4x #12 AWG): Features four stranded tinned copper grounds, providing significantly better EMI suppression and lower ground impedance than standard 3-conductor variants in the event of component failure.

  • Exposed Run (TC-ER) Rated: Complies with UL 1277 for direct-run installation out of the cable tray to the motor without requiring rigid metal conduit, saving substantial material and labor costs.

  • Heavy-Duty Industrial Jacket: The PVC outer jacket is sunlight, moisture, oil, and abrasion resistant, and approved for direct burial in wet or dry locations (-40°C to 90°C).

This 6/4 Cable is a heavy-duty 600V/1000V industrial VFD cable engineered specifically to connect Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to high-horsepower AC induction motors. Constructed with four 6 AWG tinned copper circuit conductors, an overall dual-layer shield (foil + tinned copper braid), and four 12 AWG symmetrical ground/drain wires, it is specified for industrial motor drives, processing plants, automated machinery, and commercial HVAC systems.

The 4-drain ground architecture provides critical system-level protection for motor circuits:

  • Balanced Electromagnetic Field: Placing four 12 AWG grounds symmetrically around the phase conductors balances magnetic fields and suppresses common-mode voltage spikes.
  • Bearing Fluting Prevention: Provides a low-impedance return path for stray currents directly back to the drive, preventing current from arcing through motor bearings and causing premature equipment failure.
  • Shield Grounding Efficiency: Keeps constant contact with the overall foil/braid shield assembly, making it easy to ground at drive enclosures and terminal blocks.
  • Primary Insulation: Thermoset Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE). XLPE withstands extreme voltage rise times (dv/dt), high-frequency PWM switching, and peak voltage spikes up to 2000V without softening or breakdown.
  • Overall Shielding: Features a dual shield combining an aluminum/polyester foil shield (100% coverage) with a tinned copper braid (85% coverage) to contain radiated EMI/RFI noise and protect adjacent control or sensor wiring.
  • Outer Jacket: Heavy-duty, sunlight-resistant, flame-retardant black PVC (0.080" thickness).
  • Voltage Rating: 600V (UL Type TC-ER) / 1000V (Flexible Motor Supply Cable).
  • Temperature Rating: 90°C continuous operation in both wet and dry locations (-40°C to 90°C).
  • Code Compliances: Rated UL 1277 Type TC-ER (Exposed Run), UL Type XHHW-2 conductors, approved for Direct Burial, passes IEEE 1202/UL 1685 vertical tray flame tests, and is compliant for Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations per NEC standards.

Yes! Wire America custom-cuts and distributes VFD cable by the foot and supplies master reels, allowing you to order the exact footage your project requires—eliminating jobsite scrap and extra costs. Place your order online or contact our technical sales desk directly at (833) 268-8644 for custom cut lengths, engineering submittal sheets, or bulk project pricing.

UL 1277 is the official Safety Standard for Electrical Power and Control Tray Cables. For VFD installations, a UL 1277 listing certifies that the cable meets strict flame-retardant, crush, and impact-resistance standards required for placement in cable trays. When combined with an Exposed Run (TC-ER) rating, it permits contractors to run the cable continuously out of the cable tray directly to the motor without installing rigid conduit, significantly reducing jobsite material and labor costs.
