8/2 Stranded Copper MC Cable is a 600V metal-clad cable used for 40A and 50A feeder circuits, Level 2 EV charging infrastructure, subpanel runs, and heavy 208V/240V equipment. It features two 8 AWG stranded copper circuit conductors (Black/White) and one 10 AWG green insulated ground enclosed in an aluminum interlocked armor.
Per NEC Table 310.16, 8 AWG copper has a maximum thermal rating of 55 Amps at 90°C. However, because most standard breaker terminals and disconnect switches are rated for 75°C terminations, it is typically sized at 50 Amps for circuit breaker selection.
In accordance with UL 1569 and standard manufacturing specs for 8 AWG MC Cable, 8/2 MC Cable includes a 10 AWG green THHN/THWN-2 insulated stranded copper grounding conductor.
Yes. Because the aluminum interlocked armor provides continuous mechanical protection, MC cable is approved under NEC Article 330 to be installed directly inside walls, exposed across ceilings, or laid in cable trays without pulling through pipe or conduit.
Standard 8/2 MC cable with aluminum interlocked armor is designed for dry indoor applications (rated 90°C Dry). For direct burial or wet outdoor environments, a PVC-jacketed MC cable (PVC over armor) or liquid-tight raceway system is required.
Aluminum armor is significantly lighter in weight than steel armor—reducing freight costs, easing structural load on cable trays, and making jobsite pulls much faster for field installation crews—while maintaining full impact and crush protection.
