8/3 Stranded Copper MC Cable is a 600V metal-clad cable used for 40A and 50A 120V/240V feeder circuits, subpanels, commercial EV stations, and 3-phase equipment. It features three 8 AWG stranded copper circuit conductors (Black/Red/White) and one 10 AWG green insulated ground enclosed in an aluminum interlocked armor.
8/2 MC Cable contains two conductors (Black/White) plus ground for straight 208V/240V circuits without a neutral line. 8/3 MC Cable adds a third conductor (Red), providing a dedicated neutral for 120V/240V split-phase systems, 3-phase 3-wire systems, or subpanels.
Per NEC Table 310.16, 8 AWG copper carries a maximum thermal rating of 55 Amps at 90°C. Standard breaker terminals and equipment lugs are typically rated for 75°C terminations, sizing this cable at 50 Amps for breaker selection.
In compliance with UL 1569 manufacturing standards for 8 AWG MC Cable, 8/3 MC Cable includes a 10 AWG green THHN/THWN-2 insulated stranded copper grounding conductor.
Yes. Because the aluminum interlocked armor provides continuous mechanical protection, MC cable is approved under NEC Article 330 to be installed directly inside walls, exposed across ceilings, or laid in cable trays without pulling through pipe or conduit.
Standard 8/3 MC cable with aluminum interlocked armor is designed for dry indoor applications (rated 90°C Dry). For direct burial or wet outdoor environments, a PVC-jacketed MC cable (PVC over armor) or liquid-tight raceway system is required.
