This 600 MCM 4-conductor Priority-Plex® assembly with an integrated 400 MCM Ground is a high-capacity power distribution solution for 277/480V 3-phase, 4-wire systems. By factory-twisting the phase conductors (Brown, Orange, Yellow), the neutral (Gray), and a 400 MCM Green ground, this system provides a ready-to-install circuit that eliminates the immense physical effort of managing five individual heavy-gauge wires on-site.

Why Choose Priority-Plex® 600 MCM with 400 MCM Ground?

Handling 600 MCM conductors is notoriously labor-intensive. Priority-Plex® technology pre-twists the conductors into a single, synchronized bundle, ensuring they maintain their relative positions throughout the conduit. This prevents individual wires from "crossing over" or "wedging," which is the primary cause of cable jams and high pulling tension in large-diameter industrial conduits.

  • Optimized Safety Ground: The 400 MCM Green ground is factory-integrated to provide a robust, low-impedance ground-fault path, sized specifically to meet or exceed code requirements for high-amperage industrial feeders.

  • Streamlined Site Logistics: One reel contains the full circuit, replacing a five-reel setup. This dramatically reduces the job site footprint and the time required for set-up and staging.

  • 480V Phase Identification: Permanent, factory-colored insulation (Brown, Orange, Yellow, Gray, Green) provides instant phase identification for high-voltage systems, eliminating the labor and potential human error associated with field-taping.

  • Rugged XHHW-2 Insulation: The cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) jacket is tougher than standard PVC, offering superior resistance to physical stresses during heavy pulls and a 90°C rating in both wet and dry locations.

Technical Specifications: 600 MCM 4C + 400G

  • Phase/Neutral Size: 600 MCM (kcmil)

  • Ground Size: 400 MCM (kcmil)

  • Conductor Material: AA-8000 Series Aluminum Alloy

  • Insulation Type: XHHW-2 (Cross-linked Polyethylene)

  • Voltage Rating: 600V

  • Temperature Rating: 90°C (Wet/Dry)

  • Ampacity: 385 Amps (@ 90°C) | 340 Amps (@ 75°C)

Common Applications

  • Industrial Main Feeders: Supplying power from primary switchgear to large motor control centers (MCCs) and distribution panels.

  • Hospital Infrastructure: Providing reliable, high-capacity power for critical mechanical systems and backup power distribution.

  • Data Centers: High-amperage 480V distribution from main switchgear to secondary transformers or large-scale UPS systems.

  • Central Utilities: Ideal for powering industrial-scale chillers, boilers, and large water treatment pumping stations.

Technical Note: Installing a 5-conductor 600/400 MCM bundle requires high-capacity pulling equipment. Ensure that the conduit is sized correctly for the diameter of this specific assembly per NEC Chapter 9. Terminations must be made with AL9CU-rated mechanical or compression connectors, and an approved antioxidant compound should be applied to prevent oxidation.

AWG, or American Wire Gauge, is the standard system used primarily in North America to measure the diameter of electrical conductors. This system is critical because a wire's size directly impacts its electrical resistance and how much current (ampacity) it can safely carry. A key principle is that the smaller the AWG number, the larger the wire's diameter; for instance, 12 AWG is thicker and can carry more current than 14 AWG. Sizes beyond 0 AWG are referred to as "aught" (e.g., 1/0, 2/0). Selecting the correct AWG is essential for safe electrical installations, preventing overheating, and minimizing voltage drop.
Voltage drop is the natural reduction in electrical potential that occurs as current travels through a circuit, from the power source to a device. This happens because all wires inherently have resistance, which converts some electrical energy into heat, leading to a loss of voltage. While minor voltage drop is normal, excessive amounts can cause problems like dimming lights, slow or overheating motors, and erratic electronic behavior. It can also lead to higher energy consumption and, in severe cases, create safety hazards due to overheating wires. Key factors influencing voltage drop include the wire's length and thickness (gauge), the amount of current flowing through it, and the quality of electrical connections.
In electrical wiring, amps (amperes) measure the rate of electrical current flow. Think of it as the volume of electricity moving through the wire at any given time. Crucially, every electrical wire has an ampacity rating, which is the maximum current it can safely carry continuously without overheating. Exceeding a wire's ampacity can lead to insulation damage and fire hazards, highlighting why proper wire sizing based on expected amperage is vital for safe electrical systems.
A wire's ampacity, or its safe current-carrying capacity, changes with temperature primarily because of two factors. First, the electrical resistance of copper and aluminum wires increases as they get hotter, causing them to generate more heat when current flows. Second, every wire's insulation has a maximum temperature limit; exceeding this can cause degradation and safety hazards. Therefore, in hotter environments, a wire must carry less current to avoid exceeding its insulation's temperature rating. This ensures the wire remains safe and functional, preventing overheating and potential failures.
We aim to provide authentic, precise images of each wire; however, with various product variations, it can be challenging. In such instances, we focus on showcasing the fundamental design. Always refer to the product specifications rather than relying solely on images.
