This specialized hybrid cable is engineered for 17kW to 24kW home standby generators, which are typically the largest residential units capable of powering an entire home, including multiple air conditioning systems. While smaller generators can use 8 AWG or 4 AWG, these units require the 100-amp capacity provided by 3 AWG copper. This cable bundles the high-current power conductors and the digital signal wires into a single jacket, allowing for a professional, code-compliant installation in a single pull.

The power section of this cable is designed to handle the heavy continuous loads of a 24kW generator without overheating or significant voltage drop.

  • Phase Conductors: Three insulated 3 AWG conductors (Black, Red, and White) provide the 120/240V split-phase power.
  • Dedicated Ground: A full-sized grounding conductor is included to ensure the generator and the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) share a common safety bond.
  • 100-Amp Rating: This gauge is specifically matched to the 100-amp main breakers found on the most popular 20kW, 22kW, and 24kW air-cooled generator models.

Modern "smart" transfer switches do more than just flip a switch; they manage loads and monitor engine health.

  • 9-Wire Versatility: While older units used 6 wires, many newer 22kW and 24kW systems utilize 9 control conductors to support advanced functions like Integrated Load Management (AC shed), remote battery monitoring, and digital communication between the generator controller and the ATS.
  • Unified Insulation: Every one of these 18 AWG control wires is rated for 600V, just like the large power wires. This allows them to legally occupy the same cable jacket and conduit, saving the cost of a second trench or pipe run.

Unlike standard residential building wire which is often solid, this cable uses high-strand-count annealed copper.

  • Vibration Resistance: Generators vibrate significantly while running. Stranded copper is flexible and resistant to "work hardening," meaning the connections at the generator's lugs won't crack or loosen over time due to engine oscillation.
  • Easier Routing: Pulling 3 AWG wire can be difficult; the high flexibility of this stranded composite cable makes it much easier to "train" the wire into the tight bending radius of the generator’s connection cabinetry.

Because standby generators sit outdoors, the cable is built to endure the elements for the life of the machine.

  • TC-ER Rated: Often rated as Tray Cable - Exposed Run, it is tough enough to be run in cable trays or supported by hangers without conduit where permitted.
  • Sunlight & Oil Resistant: The heavy-duty outer jacket is designed to withstand UV exposure and won't degrade if exposed to engine oil or coolant during routine maintenance.
  • Direct Burial/Conduit: Depending on the specific UL listing, these cables are ideal for direct burial in a trench or being pulled through 1.5-inch to 2-inch conduit for maximum protection.

The JP stands for Joist Pull. Certified under NEC 336.10(9) as Type TC-ER-JP, this cable has passed specialized UL laboratory testing for high structural strength and low outer-jacket friction. This means you can legally and smoothly pull this massive composite cable directly through wooden home joists and structural framing without the massive expense and labor of installing rigid conduit pipe.

Yes. The rugged, black outer PVC jacket is fully UL-approved for Direct Burial and is engineered with built-in Sunlight/UV Resistance. It is rated for 90°C wet or dry environments, allowing you to run it directly from inside a basement or utility room, drop it straight into an outdoor trench, and terminate it inside your outdoor generator enclosure or automatic transfer switch (ATS).
