Why the 16/4 200°C Fire Alarm Cable is the NYC Standard:

  • Local Law 39 (LL39) Certified: Specifically manufactured with the required NYC-certified print legend to ensure your project passes DOB electrical inspections.

  • Optimized 16 AWG Conductors: Offers the perfect balance of flexibility and low resistance, making it ideal for both signaling and power-limited circuits.

  • Premium 200°C FEP Insulation: Built with Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP), this cable offers extreme heat resistance far superior to standard 75°C or 105°C plenum wire.

  • Unshielded Flexibility: The unshielded 4-conductor design allows for faster stripping and termination, saving valuable labor time on large-scale high-rise installs.

  • Plenum Rated (FPLP): UL-listed for installation in air-handling spaces without the need for additional conduit.

Installer’s Note:

"Engineered for high-density NYC fire alarm environments, this 16/4 NYC Approved FPLP 200°C cable allows you to run multiple notification circuits in a single pull. By choosing this LL39-compliant FEP jacketed wire, you're not just buying heat resistance—you're getting a cable that pulls easier through tight conduits and terminates faster, all while providing the 200°C survivability required for modern life-safety networks."

New York City requires fire alarm cables to meet specific standards beyond standard NEC rules, specifically Local Law 39 (LL39) and Local Law 5. This means the cable must feature specialized Fluoropolymer insulation (like FEP) that is strictly flame-retardant and low-smoke. These cables carry a high temperature rating (often 200°C), providing a critical safety margin for high-rise life safety systems that standard fire wire cannot match.

Unshielded: Ideal for standard notification appliance circuits (NACs), speaker circuits, and pull stations where electromagnetic interference (EMI) is not a concern. It is more flexible and faster to terminate.

Shielded: Required for data communication links (SLC loops) or installations near high-voltage lines, elevator motors, or heavy fluorescent lighting to prevent signal interference and "nuisance alarms."

In the NYC market, 16/4 Unshielded 200°C cable is a high-capacity "workhorse" for multi-signal and high-power applications:

  • Four-Conductor Device Loops: The 16/4 design allows for multiple signals in one pull—frequently used for Duct Detectors, Fan Shutdowns, and Elevator Recall interfaces where both power and relay contacts are needed.
  • Voice Evacuation Systems: In NYC high-rises, 16 gauge is the preferred standard for speaker circuits to maintain crystal-clear audio and signal strength across dozens of floors.
  • High-Output Strobes: The 16 AWG thickness ensures that high-candela strobes receive full voltage, even on long runs, helping projects pass FDNY functional testing.
  • Mechanical Rooms: Because of the 200°C rating, this cable is perfect for wiring near steam pipes, boilers, or other high-heat zones.

Important Note: Consult Your Licensed NYC Electrician
While our cables are NYC Approved and manufactured to meet Local Law 39 standards, fire alarm requirements can vary based on your specific building type, occupancy, and the latest FDNY bulletins.

NYC Approved FPLP (Plenum): Must be used in "plenum" spaces (areas used for air circulation). They feature low-smoke, high-fire-resistance jackets.

NYC Approved FPLR (Riser): Used for vertical runs between floors.

Standard Practice: In NYC commercial construction, engineers almost always specify FPLP (Plenum) even for non-plenum areas to ensure maximum system survivability and compliance with Local Law 39.

The primary difference is the gauge (thickness) of the copper and its ability to handle Line Loss and Voltage Drop over distance.

  • 18 AWG (Thinner): Best for initiating devices like smoke detectors that require very little power.
  • 16 AWG (Thicker): Required for notification appliances (horns and strobes) that pull more current.
  • The "NYC Rule of Thumb": 16 AWG is the "safer" bet for long runs in New York high-rises. It ensures that devices at the end of the line function at 100% capacity to pass inspection. If your run is over 150 feet, 16 AWG is generally the minimum professional recommendation.

Important Note: Consult Your Licensed NYC Electrician
While our cables are NYC Approved and manufactured to meet Local Law 39 standards, fire alarm requirements can vary based on your specific building type, occupancy, and the latest FDNY bulletins.

Due to its superior heat resistance and durability, this cable is the standard for Commercial High-Rises, Hospitals, Schools, and Industrial Facilities requiring maximum fire survivability and FDNY compliance. These environments use 16/4 cable to ensure:

  • Hospitals & Schools: Maximum protection for patients and students during slow-evacuation scenarios.
  • Skyscrapers: Reliable signal integrity across 30+ floors where heat buildup in vertical shafts can be intense.

⚠️ Important Note: Consult Your Licensed NYC Electrician
While our cables are NYC Approved and manufactured to meet Local Law 39 standards, fire alarm requirements can vary based on building type, occupancy, and current FDNY bulletins. Always confirm your wire schedule with your Licensed Master Electrician or Fire Alarm Designer before installation.
