12/2 Stranded Copper MC Cable is a 600V metal-clad cable used for 120V/208V branch circuit power, lighting, and receptacle wiring in commercial, industrial, and multi-residential buildings. It features two 12 AWG stranded copper circuit conductors (Black/White) and one 12 AWG green insulated ground enclosed in an aluminum interlocked armor.
Solid MC cable uses single, solid copper wires, which are slightly stiffer to bend. Stranded MC cable utilizes Class B stranded copper wires, making the cable much more flexible, easier to pull through tight wall studs, and easier to bend into junction boxes without work-hardening the copper.
Yes. Because the aluminum interlocked armor provides continuous mechanical protection, MC cable is approved under NEC Article 330 to be installed directly inside walls, exposed across ceilings, or laid in cable trays without pulling through pipe or conduit.
Standard 12/2 MC cable with aluminum interlocked armor is designed for dry indoor applications (rated $90^\circ\text{C}$ Dry). For direct burial or wet outdoor environments, an PVC-jacketed MC cable (PVC over armor) or liquid-tight raceway system is required.
Under NEC Section 240.4(D), 12 AWG copper conductors are generally restricted to a maximum overcurrent protection rating of 20 Amps for standard branch circuits, despite having a higher raw conductor thermal ampacity rating (30A at 90°C).
Aluminum armor is significantly lighter in weight than steel armor—reducing freight costs, easing structural load on cable trays, and making jobsite pulls much faster for field installation crews—while maintaining full impact and crush protection.
