Definition and Function
Ampacity is the maximum amount of electrical current (measured in amperes) that a conductor can continuously carry under specified conditions of use without exceeding its safe temperature limits.
This is the single most critical factor in sizing conductors. Operating a wire above its rated ampacity will cause it to overheat, leading to rapid insulation degradation, potential fires, and system failure.
Key Factors That Affect Ampacity (Derating)
A wire's ampacity is not fixed; it is constantly de-rated (reduced) by the specific environment and installation methods. This requires careful calculation based on the National Electrical Code (NEC).
-
Insulation Type: Wires with high-temperature insulation (like XLPE or Silicone Rubber) have higher ampacity ratings than those with basic PVC, as they can safely handle more heat.
-
Ambient Temperature: Wires installed in hot environments (e.g., boiler rooms, rooftops, or hot climates) must have their ampacity reduced because the conductor starts at a higher base temperature.
-
Bundling/Grouping: When multi-conductor cables or single conductors are grouped tightly together in a conduit or tray, the heat they generate is trapped, significantly restricting their ability to dissipate heat. This requires a derating factor to be applied.
-
Conductor Size (Gauge): Thicker wires (smaller AWG number) have greater ampacity because they have more surface area to dissipate heat and lower electrical resistance.
Compliance and Code
The National Electrical Code (NEC) publishes detailed tables (e.g., Table 310.16) that electricians and engineers must use to correctly calculate the allowable ampacity for every circuit. Correct calculation ensures safety and prevents thermal runaway.
