URD stands for Underground Residential Distribution. It is a specialized electrical cable engineered for secondary power distribution in underground systems.
Despite the name, URD is the industry standard for moving power from a transformer to any structure—including commercial and municipal buildings—via underground trenching.
Key Technical Specs:
Common Configurations:
Single Conductor: A standalone insulated lead used for dedicated neutrals, grounding, or custom multi-wire pulls in conduit.
Duplex: 1 Insulated Conductor + 1 Neutral (120V circuits / Street lighting).
Triplex: 2 Insulated Conductors + 1 Neutral (Standard 240V residential service).
Quadruplex: 3 Insulated Conductors + 1 Neutral (3-Phase commercial service).
Contractors choose URD when they need a durable, moisture-resistant cable that can survive the compression and chemical environment of being underground for decades. It is an excellent choice for utility service drops, irrigation pumps, and outdoor lighting projects.
Yes, Aluminum Duplex URD is specifically engineered for Direct Burial. The conductors are insulated with Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE/XHHW-2), which is highly resistant to moisture, heat, and soil chemicals. While conduit is not required by most codes for the entire run, it is often recommended where the cable emerges from the ground to protect against mechanical damage.
The ampacity for 4 AWG URD Cable is:
Duct / Conduit 90 Amps
Direct Bury 125 Amps
*Ampacity: 90°C conductor temperature, 20°C ambient temperature, RHO 90, 100% load factor. Single and Quadruplex based on 3/C. Neutral wire
carries unbalanced load only. Reference NEC article 310.15 for NEC installations.
It comes down to the requirements of the load. If you are only powering a 120V circuit (like a series of street lights), Duplex is the most cost-effective option because you aren't paying for a second or third insulated conductor that you won't use. For standard 240V home service, you would need Triplex; for 3-phase commercial service, you would need Quadruplex.
We stock a full range of single conductor, duplex, triplex & quadruplex URD cables including 6 AWG URD, 6 AWG URD, 2 AWG URD, 2/0 URD & 250 MCM URD You can browse our complete inventory and view detailed specifications for each size in our Full Aluminum URD Collection here.
