Belden 5320UE is a commercial-grade, 2-conductor unshielded security and audio cable engineered for basic multi-purpose low-voltage installations requiring a heavier current capacity or lower resistance than standard 22 AWG wire. Featuring 2 independent 18 AWG conductors, this cable is UL-rated as CMR (Communications Riser), making it safe and compliant for vertical installations between floors, inside riser shafts, or within walls. Utilizing a solid-core layout, it offers enhanced structural integrity, lower DC resistance over long distances, and straightforward termination onto standard panels.

Key Features of Belden 5320UE

  • Heavy-Duty 18 AWG Wire Gauge: Built with larger 18 AWG conductors to support longer cable runs and higher current demands with minimal voltage drop, making it ideal for critical low-voltage power and signaling pathways.

  • Ultra-Compact 2-Conductor Build: Packages a single circuit path (2 discrete 18 AWG conductors) into an optimized, narrow-profile cable jacket, minimizing footprint in crowded conduits, terminal boxes, and narrow wall cavities.

  • CMR Riser Safety Rating: Certified with a UL 1666 Riser rating. The flame-retardant PVC jacket is engineered to prevent the spread of fire vertically from floor to floor, satisfying strict commercial building code requirements.

  • Highly Conductive Solid Copper: Manufactured with premium, solid bare copper conductors. Unlike its stranded counterpart (5300UE), this solid configuration delivers maximum signal integrity, lower attenuation over long cable runs, and stable punch-down, crimp, or screw-terminal terminations.

  • Premium Polyolefin Insulation: Conductors are wrapped in a high-dielectric polyolefin insulation. This formulation ensures stable electrical performance and prevents physical conductor-to-conductor shorts within the jacket.

  • Rip Cord Integration: Includes a built-in nylon rip cord beneath the jacket, allowing installers to easily score and strip back long sections of the outer sheath without risking damage to the inner conductor insulation.

Common Applications

  • Commercial Security & Access Control: Interconnecting single-zone door contacts, window sensors, glass-break detectors, motion sensors, panic buttons, and magnetic locks or door strikes requiring low-voltage power supply loops.

  • Intercom & PA Systems: Connecting individual localized intercom stations, public address horn networks, and master control voice lines.

  • Sound & Audio Distribution: Wiring low-voltage background music systems, residential stereo zones, and commercial 70V/100V speaker lines where solid-core cabling is preferred.

  • Background Control & Signaling: Distributing simple low-voltage digital signals, single-stage relay controls, HVAC remote temperature sensors, thermostat linkages, and industrial automation commands.

Technical Note: Because Belden 5320UE is an unshielded cable with solid conductors, it is optimized for fixed, permanent installations within walls or conduits. It should not be utilized in applications requiring continuous flexing, such as inside robotic tracks or on moving machinery. Additionally, to avoid signal degradation, noise coupling, or data corruption, do not route this low-voltage cable parallel to high-voltage AC power lines (120V/240V or higher) within the same wall cavity or conduit unless separated by an approved physical barrier or a minimum distance of 50 mm (2 inches). If your layout requires installation through drop ceilings utilized for environmental air exchange, the plenum-rated equivalent (Belden 6320UE) must be used instead.

CABLE TYPE: 18 AWG / 2-Conductor Solid Unshielded Riser Cable

AWG, or American Wire Gauge, is the standard system used primarily in North America to measure the diameter of electrical conductors. This system is critical because a wire's size directly impacts its electrical resistance and how much current (ampacity) it can safely carry. A key principle is that the smaller the AWG number, the larger the wire's diameter; for instance, 12 AWG is thicker and can carry more current than 14 AWG. Sizes beyond 0 AWG are referred to as "aught" (e.g., 1/0, 2/0). Selecting the correct AWG is essential for safe electrical installations, preventing overheating, and minimizing voltage drop.
Voltage drop is the natural reduction in electrical potential that occurs as current travels through a circuit, from the power source to a device. This happens because all wires inherently have resistance, which converts some electrical energy into heat, leading to a loss of voltage. While minor voltage drop is normal, excessive amounts can cause problems like dimming lights, slow or overheating motors, and erratic electronic behavior. It can also lead to higher energy consumption and, in severe cases, create safety hazards due to overheating wires. Key factors influencing voltage drop include the wire's length and thickness (gauge), the amount of current flowing through it, and the quality of electrical connections.
In electrical wiring, amps (amperes) measure the rate of electrical current flow. Think of it as the volume of electricity moving through the wire at any given time. Crucially, every electrical wire has an ampacity rating, which is the maximum current it can safely carry continuously without overheating. Exceeding a wire's ampacity can lead to insulation damage and fire hazards, highlighting why proper wire sizing based on expected amperage is vital for safe electrical systems.
A wire's ampacity, or its safe current-carrying capacity, changes with temperature primarily because of two factors. First, the electrical resistance of copper and aluminum wires increases as they get hotter, causing them to generate more heat when current flows. Second, every wire's insulation has a maximum temperature limit; exceeding this can cause degradation and safety hazards. Therefore, in hotter environments, a wire must carry less current to avoid exceeding its insulation's temperature rating. This ensures the wire remains safe and functional, preventing overheating and potential failures.
We aim to provide authentic, precise images of each wire; however, with various product variations, it can be challenging. In such instances, we focus on showcasing the fundamental design. Always refer to the product specifications rather than relying solely on images.
