Belden 5102UE is a commercial-grade, multi-conductor unshielded security and audio cable engineered for high-power, low-voltage installations in commercial, institutional, and residential settings. Featuring 4 independent 14 AWG conductors, this cable balances robust current capacity with cross-floor compliance. It is UL-rated as CL3R / CMR (Communications Riser), making it safe and legally compliant for vertical installations inside riser shafts, between floors, or within walls, offering a low-resistance solution for multi-circuit or bi-wired power and audio pathways.

Key Features of Belden 5102UE

  • High-Capacity 14 AWG Wire Gauge: Built with thick 14 AWG conductors to support long commercial installation runs and higher current demands, significantly lowering voltage drop compared to standard 18 AWG or 22 AWG cables.

  • Streamlined Multi-Conductor Build: Packages 4 discrete 14 AWG circuits into a single, cohesive cable profile, minimizing installation labor and streamlining wire management behind high-output audio racks or power distribution panels.

  • CMR / CL3R Riser Safety Rating: Certified with a UL 1666 Riser rating. The flame-retardant outer jacket is engineered to prevent the spread of fire vertically from floor to floor, satisfying strict commercial building code requirements.

  • Highly Conductive Stranded Copper: Manufactured with premium stranded bare copper conductors in a 19x27 stranding layout. This configuration delivers exceptional electrical conductivity while maintaining excellent physical flexibility for clean routing through wall cavities and conduits.

  • Premium Polypropylene Insulation: Conductors are wrapped in a high-dielectric polypropylene (PP) insulation. This material ensures stable electrical performance and prevents physical conductor-to-conductor shorts within the outer jacket.

  • Rip Cord Integration: Includes a built-in nylon rip cord beneath the jacket, allowing installers to easily score and strip back long sections of the outer sheath without risking damage to the inner conductor insulation.

Common Applications

  • High-Power Sound & Commercial Audio: Perfect for high-wattage, low-impedance (4-ohm/8-ohm) speaker runs, bi-amplified monitoring systems, and long-distance constant-voltage (70V/100V) speaker networks in auditoriums, commercial venues, and places of worship.

  • Access Control & Critical Security: Powering multi-device security arrays, heavy-duty magnetic door locks, electronic crash bars, and motorized gate hardware requiring stable low-voltage power supply loops.

  • Addressable Fire & Emergency Systems: Connecting power-limited fire alarm components, multi-circuit notification appliances, and signaling networks requiring heavy-gauge multi-conductor infrastructure.

  • Building Control & Signaling: Routing high-current low-voltage digital signals, power-limited relay controls, ventilation damper actuators, and climate control automation networks.

Technical Note: Because Belden 5102UE is an unshielded cable, it is optimized for high-power distribution and speaker pathways but lacks protection against severe high-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI). To avoid signal degradation or inductive noise coupling, do not route this low-voltage cable parallel to high-voltage AC power lines (120V/240V or higher) within the same wall cavity or conduit unless separated by an approved physical barrier or a minimum distance of 50 mm (2 inches). If your project layout requires installation through drop ceilings utilized for environmental air exchange, the plenum-rated equivalent (Belden 6102UE) must be used instead.

CABLE TYPE: 14 AWG / 4-Conductor Stranded Unshielded Riser Cable

AWG, or American Wire Gauge, is the standard system used primarily in North America to measure the diameter of electrical conductors. This system is critical because a wire's size directly impacts its electrical resistance and how much current (ampacity) it can safely carry. A key principle is that the smaller the AWG number, the larger the wire's diameter; for instance, 12 AWG is thicker and can carry more current than 14 AWG. Sizes beyond 0 AWG are referred to as "aught" (e.g., 1/0, 2/0). Selecting the correct AWG is essential for safe electrical installations, preventing overheating, and minimizing voltage drop.
Voltage drop is the natural reduction in electrical potential that occurs as current travels through a circuit, from the power source to a device. This happens because all wires inherently have resistance, which converts some electrical energy into heat, leading to a loss of voltage. While minor voltage drop is normal, excessive amounts can cause problems like dimming lights, slow or overheating motors, and erratic electronic behavior. It can also lead to higher energy consumption and, in severe cases, create safety hazards due to overheating wires. Key factors influencing voltage drop include the wire's length and thickness (gauge), the amount of current flowing through it, and the quality of electrical connections.
In electrical wiring, amps (amperes) measure the rate of electrical current flow. Think of it as the volume of electricity moving through the wire at any given time. Crucially, every electrical wire has an ampacity rating, which is the maximum current it can safely carry continuously without overheating. Exceeding a wire's ampacity can lead to insulation damage and fire hazards, highlighting why proper wire sizing based on expected amperage is vital for safe electrical systems.
A wire's ampacity, or its safe current-carrying capacity, changes with temperature primarily because of two factors. First, the electrical resistance of copper and aluminum wires increases as they get hotter, causing them to generate more heat when current flows. Second, every wire's insulation has a maximum temperature limit; exceeding this can cause degradation and safety hazards. Therefore, in hotter environments, a wire must carry less current to avoid exceeding its insulation's temperature rating. This ensures the wire remains safe and functional, preventing overheating and potential failures.
We aim to provide authentic, precise images of each wire; however, with various product variations, it can be challenging. In such instances, we focus on showcasing the fundamental design. Always refer to the product specifications rather than relying solely on images.
