This #6 AWG Copper XHHW-2 Building Wire is primarily designed for power distribution within conduit or other recognized raceways. It is suitable for services, feeders, and branch circuit wiring as specified by the National Electrical Code. This wire features a soft drawn bare copper conductor and durable cross-linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation.

The acronym XHHW-2 describes the wire's key characteristics:

  • X: Cross-linked polyethylene insulation (XLPE)
  • HH: High Heat-resistant, indicating it can withstand higher operating temperatures
  • W: Water-resistant, meaning it is suitable for wet locations
  • -2: Denotes improved insulation properties, specifically maintaining a 90°C rating in both wet and dry environments

The key specifications for this #6 AWG Copper XHHW-2 Building Wire are:

  • Conductor Material: Soft drawn bare copper in compressed stranding
  • Insulation Material: Abrasion, heat, and moisture resistant cross-linked polyethylene (XLP)
  • Voltage Rating: Dual-rated for 600V or 1000V
  • Temperature Rating: 90°C in both wet and dry locations
  • Ampacity (@ 90°C): 75 Amps (for not more than three conductors in raceway or cable or earth, based on 30°C ambient temperature)

XHHW-2 Copper Wire is primarily used for power distribution in various applications. These include services, feeders, and branch circuit wiring within conduit or other recognized raceways, as outlined in the National Electrical Code. It is a good choice for industrial applications where enhanced resistance to moisture and heat is desired.

This #6 AWG Copper XHHW-2 wire has an ampacity rating of 75 Amps at 90°C. This rating is based on not more than three current-carrying conductors in a raceway, cable, or directly buried in earth, with an ambient temperature of 30°C, as per Table 310.16 of the National Electrical Code.

Yes, #6 AWG Copper XHHW-2 Building Wire is suitable for use in both wet and dry locations. Its advanced cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation ensures consistent performance at temperatures not exceeding 90°C in either environment.

This XHHW-2 wire is dual-rated for 600V or 1000V. This makes it versatile for a range of electrical distribution systems in commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings.

XHHW-2 wire generally offers superior performance compared to THHN wire, particularly due to its insulation. XHHW-2 uses thermoset XLPE insulation, which provides better resistance to moisture, chemicals, and abrasion, and maintains a 90°C rating in both wet and dry conditions. THHN typically uses thermoplastic PVC insulation, which can be less flexible in cold temperatures and may emit toxic smoke when burned, though it is often a more economical choice for standard commercial and residential conduit runs.

The XHHW-2 insulation for this product is available in ten solid colors. This allows for easy circuit identification during installation and maintenance.
