This 6 AWG, 3-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable is the industry standard for high-power residential branch circuits. It is most commonly used for heavy-duty appliances that require a 120/240V connection with a neutral and a ground. Typical applications include electric ranges, ovens, large hot tubs, and 50A to 60A sub-panels. It is also a popular choice for Level 2 EV Chargers that require a 50-amp circuit.
At the 6 AWG size, copper provides excellent conductivity and thermal stability, making it ideal for continuous high-load applications.
Per NEC Article 334.80, NM-B cable must be sized using the 60°C temperature column of Table 310.16. While the internal conductors are rated for 90°C, the overall cable assembly is limited to the 60°C rating to account for heat dissipation within thermal insulation and wood framing.
⚠️ PRO TIP: Because 55 Amps is not a standard circuit breaker size, NEC 240.4(B) (the "Next Standard Size Up" rule) often allows this cable to be protected by a 60 Amp breaker, provided the actual load does not exceed 55 Amps.
This cable follows the standard color-coding used for 120/240V circuits in North America:
While 14, 12, and 10 AWG NM-B cables use color-coded jackets (White, Yellow, and Orange respectively), heavy-gauge 6 AWG NM-B typically features a Black outer jacket. The jacket is a flame-retardant, heat-resistant PVC.
To maintain code compliance and safety, 6/3 NM-B has strict environmental requirements:
