A staple for modern residential electrical infrastructure, this 6 AWG NM-B Copper Building Wire is the professional’s choice for intermediate high-load circuits. Featuring two insulated current-carrying copper conductors and a dedicated bare ground, this cable provides a reliable, high-integrity power path for heavy household equipment while remaining flexible enough for easy routing through interior wood-frame construction.

Why Choose 6/3 NM-B Copper Building Wire?

This 2-conductor (plus ground) configuration is engineered specifically for indoor dry-location wiring. The Type NM-B classification allows for installation without conduit, saving significant labor time and material costs in residential settings. The use of premium annealed copper ensures low electrical resistance and minimal heat buildup, even during peak demand.

  • Optimized Copper Performance: Soft-drawn copper conductors deliver maximum conductivity and are easy to terminate in panel lugs and heavy-duty receptacles.

  • Simplified Installation Profile: The slick, black PVC outer jacket is designed to minimize drag when pulling through studs, joists, and tight attic spaces.

  • Integrated Safety Ground: Includes a full-sized bare copper grounding wire, ensuring a continuous low-impedance path for fault currents.

  • THHN-Grade Insulation: Each conductor is wrapped in heat-resistant PVC and finished with a clear nylon jacket, offering superior protection against nicks and abrasions during the pull.

This 6 AWG, 3-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable is the industry standard for high-power residential branch circuits. It is most commonly used for heavy-duty appliances that require a 120/240V connection with a neutral and a ground. Typical applications include electric ranges, ovens, large hot tubs, and 50A to 60A sub-panels. It is also a popular choice for Level 2 EV Chargers that require a 50-amp circuit.

At the 6 AWG size, copper provides excellent conductivity and thermal stability, making it ideal for continuous high-load applications.

  • Integrated Ground: The cable contains three insulated conductors and one bare equipment grounding conductor, providing a complete and code-compliant path for fault current.
  • Cost-Effective Installation: NM-B (Non-Metallic) cable allows for rapid installation through bored holes in wood framing without the need for a separate conduit system, provided it is installed in a "dry" interior location.
  • Durable Construction: The conductors feature a PVC insulation with a thin nylon coating (often referred to as THHN/THWN-2 internals), which reduces friction during installation and increases resistance to abrasion.

Per NEC Article 334.80, NM-B cable must be sized using the 60°C temperature column of Table 310.16. While the internal conductors are rated for 90°C, the overall cable assembly is limited to the 60°C rating to account for heat dissipation within thermal insulation and wood framing.

  • 60°C Rating: 55 Amps
  • 75°C/90°C Rating (For Derating Only): 65A / 75A

⚠️ PRO TIP: Because 55 Amps is not a standard circuit breaker size, NEC 240.4(B) (the "Next Standard Size Up" rule) often allows this cable to be protected by a 60 Amp breaker, provided the actual load does not exceed 55 Amps.

This cable follows the standard color-coding used for 120/240V circuits in North America:

  1. Black: Hot (Line 1)
  2. Red: Hot (Line 2)
  3. White: Neutral
  4. Bare Copper: Ground

While 14, 12, and 10 AWG NM-B cables use color-coded jackets (White, Yellow, and Orange respectively), heavy-gauge 6 AWG NM-B typically features a Black outer jacket. The jacket is a flame-retardant, heat-resistant PVC.

To maintain code compliance and safety, 6/3 NM-B has strict environmental requirements:

  • Dry Locations Only: NM-B is not rated for wet or damp locations. It must never be installed outdoors, even if it is inside a conduit, as moisture can accumulate and cause the cable to fail.
  • Physical Protection: If the cable is run in an area where it could be hit (such as an unfinished basement wall), it must be protected by a sleeve or conduit.
  • Bending Radius: You must maintain a bending radius of at least 5 times the cable's diameter to ensure the copper strands and insulation are not compromised by excessive stress.
