A versatile staple for residential power, this 6 AWG NM-B Copper Building Wire is specifically engineered for high-demand interior branch circuits. Featuring two high-conductivity copper conductors and a dedicated bare grounding wire, this assembly provides a reliable, high-performance solution for powering the essential heavy-duty appliances in modern homes.

Why Choose 6/2 NM-B Copper Building Wire?

This 2-conductor (with ground) cable is designed for ease of use in dry-location residential wiring. The Type NM-B construction allows for direct routing through wooden framing members without the added complexity of conduit, while the solid annealed copper ensures minimal voltage drop and superior electrical efficiency for sustained loads.

  • High-Purity Copper Conductors: Soft-drawn copper provides maximum electrical throughput and remains flexible for easier termination and routing.

  • Streamlined Pulling Geometry: The flat, low-friction PVC jacket is optimized to glide through bored studs and joists, significantly reducing physical strain during the rough-in phase.

  • Simplified Grounding Path: Includes a full-sized bare copper grounding conductor to ensure immediate fault protection and total code compliance.

  • Advanced Insulation Shielding: Individual conductors are protected with heat-resistant PVC and a smooth nylon outer layer (THHN/THWN-2) to resist nicks and abrasions.

This 6 AWG, 2-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable is a heavy-duty residential power cable designed for high-amperage 240V circuits that do not require a neutral wire. It is the industry standard for dedicated 240V loads such as electric water heaters, baseboard heaters, and certain central air conditioning units. It is also frequently utilized for Level 2 EV chargers that utilize a 2-wire plus ground configuration (such as a NEMA 6-50 plug or hardwired setup).

At the 6 AWG size, copper provides the thermal stability and low resistance required for continuous high-draw equipment.

  • Integrated Ground: The cable contains two insulated conductors and one bare equipment grounding conductor, ensuring a safe path for fault current.
  • Simplified Routing: As an NM-B cable (Non-Metallic), it can be run directly through bored holes in wood studs and joists without the need for conduit, significantly lowering material and labor costs compared to THHN-in-pipe installations.
  • 2-Conductor Efficiency: By omitting the neutral wire required in "3-conductor" versions, the cable has a smaller overall diameter and is more cost-effective for equipment that only requires two "hot" legs.

In accordance with NEC Article 334.80, all NM-B cables must be rated based on the 60°C temperature column of Table 310.16. While the internal copper conductors are insulated with 90°C rated material, the overall assembly is limited to the 60°C rating to account for the heat-retention properties of residential wall cavities.

  • 60°C Rating: 55 Amps
  • 75°C/90°C Rating (For Derating Only): 65A / 75A

⚠️ PRO TIP: Since 55 Amps is not a standard breaker size, NEC 240.4(B) often allows you to move to the "next standard size up," which is a 60 Amp breaker, provided the actual calculated load of the appliance does not exceed 55 Amps.

This cable is designed for 240V branch circuits and follows standard identification:

  1. Black: Hot (Line 1)
  2. White: Typically Hot (Line 2) — Note: In a 240V application, the white wire must be re-identified with black or red tape at both ends to indicate it is a "hot" conductor.
  3. Bare Copper: Ground

While 14, 12, and 10 AWG NM-B use color-coded jackets, heavy-duty 6 AWG NM-B typically uses a Black outer jacket. The jacket is a flame-retardant, moisture-resistant PVC designed for easy pulling through wood framing.

To ensure long-term safety and code compliance, follow these installation rules:

  • Dry Locations Only: NM-B is strictly for indoor, dry environments. It must never be used outdoors, even in conduit, as the paper wrapping inside the jacket can wick moisture and lead to cable failure.
  • Structural Protection: If the cable is exposed in a garage or basement where it might be subject to physical damage, it should be protected by a sleeve of EMT or PVC conduit.
  • Bending Radius: Do not bend the cable to a radius smaller than 5 times its diameter. Sharp bends can stress the copper strands and compromise the insulation's integrity.
