This 6 AWG, 2-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable is a heavy-duty residential power cable designed for high-amperage 240V circuits that do not require a neutral wire. It is the industry standard for dedicated 240V loads such as electric water heaters, baseboard heaters, and certain central air conditioning units. It is also frequently utilized for Level 2 EV chargers that utilize a 2-wire plus ground configuration (such as a NEMA 6-50 plug or hardwired setup).
At the 6 AWG size, copper provides the thermal stability and low resistance required for continuous high-draw equipment.
In accordance with NEC Article 334.80, all NM-B cables must be rated based on the 60°C temperature column of Table 310.16. While the internal copper conductors are insulated with 90°C rated material, the overall assembly is limited to the 60°C rating to account for the heat-retention properties of residential wall cavities.
⚠️ PRO TIP: Since 55 Amps is not a standard breaker size, NEC 240.4(B) often allows you to move to the "next standard size up," which is a 60 Amp breaker, provided the actual calculated load of the appliance does not exceed 55 Amps.
This cable is designed for 240V branch circuits and follows standard identification:
While 14, 12, and 10 AWG NM-B use color-coded jackets, heavy-duty 6 AWG NM-B typically uses a Black outer jacket. The jacket is a flame-retardant, moisture-resistant PVC designed for easy pulling through wood framing.
