"Maximum ampacity for utility-scale primary power—engineered with tree-retardant XLPE and dual-layer water blocking for superior grid reliability in 35kV super-feeder circuits."

Why Utilities Specify the 500 MCM 35kV URD

The 500 MCM 35kV URD cable is the definitive choice for high-density primary power distribution. Engineered to handle massive current loads, this cable is the industry standard for substation-to-grid interconnects and heavy industrial primary services where reliability cannot be compromised.

  • Dual-Layer Water Block Protection: Moisture is the single greatest threat to high-capacity 35kV lines. This cable is manufactured with water-blocking compounds in the conductor core and water-swellable agents in the neutral layer, ensuring a total longitudinal seal against water ingress.

  • Tree-Retardant XLPE (TR-XLPE): The 345-mil insulation wall utilizes premium TR-XLPE to inhibit "water treeing." This is critical for 500 MCM runs, as the heat generated by high current loads can accelerate insulation degradation in damp environments without this protection.

  • 1/3 Concentric Neutral: Featuring 16 x #12 AWG  annealed bare copper wires, the 1/3 neutral configuration provides a massive ground-fault return path while shielding the core from external electrical stress.

  • High-Strength 1350-H19 Aluminum: The aluminum core is designed to withstand the massive mechanical tension required to pull heavy-gauge 500 MCM cable through long primary duct banks.

Common 35kV Applications

  • Substation Exit Feeders: Carrying the primary load from utility substations into the main underground distribution network.

  • Utility-Scale Renewables: Serving as the main collector cable for large wind farms and utility-scale solar arrays.

  • Critical Infrastructure Power: Providing primary service to hospitals, data centers, and major municipal pumping stations.

Under standard conditions (90°C conductor, 20°C earth temperature, and 90 RHO soil resistivity):

  • Direct Buried: Approximately 430 Amps.
  • In Underground Duct: Approximately 350 Amps.

⚠️ CUSTOMER WARNING: Actual ampacity must be calculated based on your specific project conditions, including soil thermal resistivity (RHO), burial depth, duct bank configuration, and load factor per NEC Article 311. Consult a licensed electrical engineer for final system design.

  • Approximate OD: 1.55 to 1.65 inches.
  • Single Cable: A 3-inch conduit is the standard choice.
  • Triplex (3 cables): A 4-inch conduit is the most common size, providing a safe 40% fill ratio. For long runs with many bends, moving to a 5-inch conduit will significantly reduce pulling tension.

Because this cable is designed for direct burial, it is constantly exposed to ground moisture. The water block technology uses swellable agents within the conductor strands. If the jacket is ever breached, these agents expand to create a physical dam, preventing water from traveling down the cable and causing "water treeing"—microscopic cracks in the insulation that eventually lead to failure.

A 1/3 neutral means the copper concentric wires have a cross-sectional area equal to one-third of the 500 MCM aluminum conductor. This is the industry standard for three-phase systems with balanced loads. It ensures there is enough copper to handle fault currents without the unnecessary weight and cost of a full neutral.

Maintaining a proper bend radius is vital to prevent internal damage to the 35kV insulation layers:

  • During Installation (Pulling): 38 inches.
  • Final Training (Fixed): 19 inches.
  • Warning: Forcing the cable into a tighter bend than 19 inches can cause the concentric neutrals to dig into the insulation shield, creating "hot spots" that lead to premature cable failure.
