Because it is uninsulated and highly conductive, 4 gauge bare copper is primarily used for grounding and bonding systems. It is a staple for residential and commercial electrical panels, grounding utility equipment, and connecting lightning protection systems to the earth. Its stranded construction also makes it suitable for use as a messenger or support wire for overhead distribution.
Yes. Our 4 AWG bare copper is Soft Drawn (Annealed). Soft-drawn copper is much more flexible and easier to work with than "Hard Drawn" copper. This makes it significantly easier for electricians to bend around corners, route through tight spaces, and secure to grounding rods or bus bars without the wire "springing" back.
Yes. This wire is Direct Burial Rated. Bare copper is naturally resistant to corrosion from soil and moisture. It is the industry standard for creating a "Grounding Electrode Loop" or connecting a service panel to a copper-clad ground rod driven into the soil.
While both solid and stranded copper have the exact same electrical capacity, stranded wire is highly preferred by installers for its flexibility. Solid copper wire in larger gauges is incredibly rigid and behaves like a stiff metal rod in the field. Stranded wire allows installation crews to easily manipulate the conductor, bend it around foundation walls, and cleanly transition it into service panels without kinking or fighting the metal.
Our 4 AWG Bare Copper is manufactured to meet rigorous industry standards, including:
The nominal outside diameter (OD) of a 4 AWG stranded bare copper wire is approximately 0.232 inches.
