This composite cable is the specialized solution for mid-range residential standby generators. While 8 AWG is sufficient for smaller units and 3 AWG is required for the largest air-cooled models, 4 AWG copper is the "sweet spot" for 12kW to 16kW systems. It provides an 85-amp capacity, allowing these generators to power high-demand loads like central air conditioners, well pumps, and electric water heaters simultaneously without the risk of overheating the conductors or causing excessive voltage drop during motor startups.

Automatic standby generators require constant communication with the transfer switch to function correctly.

  • Standard Signal Configuration: The 18/6C control bundle provides the six essential conductors needed for standard Generac, Kohler, and Briggs & Stratton installations (N1, N2 sensing, T1 battery charge, and the 0, 194, 23 start/transfer signals).
  • Consolidated Installation: By combining the four heavy-duty power wires (Black, Red, White, and Ground) with the six signal wires under one jacket, you eliminate the need to pull ten separate wires. This reduces labor time by more than 50%.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) has strict rules regarding "mixed-voltage" raceways. Normally, you cannot run low-voltage control wires in the same pipe as 240V power lines.

  • The Code-Compliant Solution: This cable is manufactured so that every conductor—including the small 18 AWG signal wires—is rated for 600V.
  • Single Conduit Benefit: Because the insulation is rated for the highest voltage present, you can legally run the entire bundle through a single conduit or trench. This saves the significant expense of installing a second, separate pipe for the control signals.

Residential generators are essentially engines that produce significant vibration while under load.

  • Flexibility and Durability: This cable uses high-strand-count annealed copper rather than solid wire. Stranded copper is far more resistant to "work hardening," meaning it can absorb years of engine vibration without cracking or becoming brittle.
  • Ease of Termination: 4 AWG stranded copper is much easier to "train" and bend within the confined wiring space of a generator terminal block, ensuring a tight, low-resistance connection that won't loosen over time.

Since the run between the house and the generator pad is outdoors, this cable is designed for maximum environmental resistance:

  • TC-ER Rated: Often rated as Tray Cable - Exposed Run, it is tough enough to be installed without conduit in certain jurisdictions (check local codes) or pulled through 1.25-inch to 1.5-inch conduit.
  • Weatherproof Outer Jacket: The PVC jacket is formulated to resist UV rays, moisture, and common lawn chemicals like fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Direct Burial Options: Many versions of this cable are rated for direct burial, providing a streamlined look for the property by keeping the entire run underground.

The JP stands for Joist Pull. Certified under NEC 336.10(9) as Type TC-ER-JP, this cable has passed specialized UL laboratory testing for high structural strength and low outer-jacket friction. This means you can legally and smoothly pull this massive composite cable directly through wooden home joists and structural framing without the massive expense and labor of installing rigid conduit pipe.

Yes. The rugged, black outer PVC jacket is fully UL-approved for Direct Burial and is engineered with built-in Sunlight/UV Resistance. It is rated for 90°C wet or dry environments, allowing you to run it directly from inside a basement or utility room, drop it straight into an outdoor trench, and terminate it inside your outdoor generator enclosure or automatic transfer switch (ATS).

Wire America supplies an extensive inventory of Generator Cable cut by the foot or on master reels.
