This 4 AWG, 3-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable is a heavy-gauge power cable designed for high-capacity residential branch circuits. It is the go-to choice for massive electrical loads that require a dedicated neutral and ground. Common applications include wiring for electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers, large electric ranges, commercial-grade steam showers, and 70A to 80A sub-panels. Because it is rated NM-B, it is strictly for use in dry, indoor locations.
At the 4 AWG size, copper offers excellent conductivity with a smaller diameter than aluminum, making it easier to pull through bored holes in wooden framing.
In accordance with NEC Article 334.80, NM-B cable must be sized based on the 60°C temperature column of the ampacity table, regardless of the higher heat rating of the internal insulation.
⚠️ PRO TIP: Even if your breaker is rated for 75°C, you must abide by the 60°C rule for NM-B. Consequently, a 70 Amp circuit breaker is the maximum standard protection allowed for this cable in most jurisdictions.
This cable follows standard North American color-coding for 120/240V systems:
While smaller gauges of NM-B (like 14, 12, and 10 AWG) use color-coded jackets to indicate gauge, heavy-duty sizes like 4 AWG typically utilize a Black outer jacket. The jacket is made of a tough, flame-retardant PVC that includes a nylon coating on the internal conductors for easier pulling.
While 4/3 NM-B is powerful, it has specific environmental and mechanical limitations:
