Specifically optimized for heavy-amperage residential branch circuits, this 4 AWG NM-B Copper Building Wire provides the heavy-duty power delivery required for modern high-performance homes. Featuring two insulated copper conductors and a dedicated bare ground wire, this assembly is engineered for interior dry-location wiring where high conductivity and long-term reliability are paramount.

Why Choose 4/3 NM-B Copper Building Wire?

This 2-conductor (with ground) cable is a staple for professional contractors handling high-load appliances. The Type NM-B construction allows for a direct pull through wooden framing members without the added labor or cost of conduit, while the solid copper core ensures minimal voltage drop over long residential runs.

  • High-Efficiency Copper Core: Annealed (soft) copper conductors offer the superior electrical performance and flexibility needed for tight residential installs.

  • Low-Friction Pulling Jacket: The slick, black PVC outer jacket is designed to slide easily through bored holes in studs and joists, reducing physical strain on the installer.

  • Integrated Safety Ground: Includes a full-sized bare copper grounding conductor to ensure immediate fault current paths and total code compliance.

  • Dual-Layer Insulation: Individual conductors are protected by heat-resistant PVC and a slick nylon topcoat (THHN/THWN-2), providing enhanced protection against abrasion.

Technical Specifications: 4/3 NM-B Copper

This 4 AWG, 3-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable is a heavy-gauge power cable designed for high-capacity residential branch circuits. It is the go-to choice for massive electrical loads that require a dedicated neutral and ground. Common applications include wiring for electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers, large electric ranges, commercial-grade steam showers, and 70A to 80A sub-panels. Because it is rated NM-B, it is strictly for use in dry, indoor locations.

At the 4 AWG size, copper offers excellent conductivity with a smaller diameter than aluminum, making it easier to pull through bored holes in wooden framing.

  • Integrated Ground: This cable features three insulated current-carrying conductors and one bare equipment grounding conductor, providing a complete solution for 120/240V circuits.
  • Ease of Installation: NM-B (often called Romex) eliminates the need for expensive conduit runs within interior walls. The flexible PVC jacket protects the conductors while allowing for relatively easy routing through floor joists and wall studs.
  • Reliable Performance: Copper's superior thermal properties ensure that connections at breakers and terminals remain stable under high-load cycles, such as those found in EV charging.

In accordance with NEC Article 334.80, NM-B cable must be sized based on the 60°C temperature column of the ampacity table, regardless of the higher heat rating of the internal insulation.

  • 60°C Rating: 70 Amps
  • 75°C/90°C Rating (For Derating Only): 85A / 95A

⚠️ PRO TIP: Even if your breaker is rated for 75°C, you must abide by the 60°C rule for NM-B. Consequently, a 70 Amp circuit breaker is the maximum standard protection allowed for this cable in most jurisdictions.

This cable follows standard North American color-coding for 120/240V systems:

  1. Black: Hot (Phase A)
  2. Red: Hot (Phase B)
  3. White: Neutral
  4. Bare Copper: Ground

While smaller gauges of NM-B (like 14, 12, and 10 AWG) use color-coded jackets to indicate gauge, heavy-duty sizes like 4 AWG typically utilize a Black outer jacket. The jacket is made of a tough, flame-retardant PVC that includes a nylon coating on the internal conductors for easier pulling.

While 4/3 NM-B is powerful, it has specific environmental and mechanical limitations:

  • Dry Locations Only: This cable is not rated for wet or damp locations. It cannot be used outdoors, even in conduit, as moisture can accumulate and degrade the jacket over time.
  • Physical Protection: If the cable is exposed (for example, running down a basement wall to a panel), it should be protected by a sleeve or conduit to prevent accidental impact damage.
  • Bending Radius: 4 AWG copper is quite stiff. You must maintain a bending radius of at least 5 times the cable diameter to prevent stress fractures in the copper strands or the insulation.
