"Designed for maximum electrical performance, heavy-duty grounding, bonding, and primary power distribution, this 4/0 AWG Stranded Bare Copper wire is engineered for the highest-capacity infrastructure demands. Featuring soft-drawn (annealed) construction and a high-flexibility 19-strand layout, it delivers an optimal blend of field bendability and high electrical mass, making it a reliable solution for utility substations, data centers, and heavy industrial facilities."

Why Professionals Choose 4/0 AWG 19-Strand Bare Copper

4/0 conductor is a primary choice for high-amperage commercial service entrances, heavy industrial grounding rings, and robust lightning protection networks.  This size has a low-impedance path capable of safely clearing major fault currents or lightning surges. When pulling through tight conduit systems or routing intricate ground loops around structural steel, standard 7-strand wire can become incredibly rigid. This premium 19-strand layout splits that same heavy copper mass into nineteen finer individual strands, drastically reducing cable stiffness, cutting installation stress, and allowing smoother field bends without sacrificing structural longevity.

  • Maximum Conductivity: 99.9% pure, uninsulated copper delivers an open, low-impedance path to ground to safely absorb high-amperage short circuits.

  • Premium 19-Strand Flexibility: Concentric 19-wire engineering creates a remarkably pliable conductor that easily conforms to tight radiuses, equipment corners, and grounding busbars.

  • Soft-Drawn (Annealed): The thermal annealing process softens the copper's crystalline matrix, removing stubborn mechanical wire memory and making the cable highly workable for field technicians.

  • Direct Burial Resilience: Uninsulated bare copper natively fights off moisture, oxidation, and aggressive soil chemistry, removing the need for a protective jacket when buried or cast in stone.

4/0 bare copper wire is a high-capacity conductor used for heavy-duty electrical grounding, structural lightning protection, and industrial bonding. Because of its massive cross-sectional area and exceptional conductivity, it is the standard specification for routing high-voltage surges safely to the earth. It is primarily used for burying main perimeter ground rings around data centers, hospitals, and substations, building massive subsurface utility grids, creating structural concrete-encased Ufer grounds, and bonding high-output industrial generators or commercial solar fields.

The nominal outside diameter (OD) of a 4/0 AWG stranded bare copper wire is approximately 0.528 inches (13.41 mm).

  • Minimum Requirement: For a single 4/0 bare copper wire installed purely for physical protection, a 1-1/4 inch PVC or EMT conduit is the standard code minimum.
  • Recommended: A 1-1/2 inch or 2-inch conduit is strongly recommended for runs exceeding 50 feet or containing multiple 90-degree elbows. At over half an inch thick, 4/0 copper is incredibly heavy and stiff; a larger pipe dramatically reduces pulling friction and prevents the wire from binding during installation.

Wire America ships directly from regional hubs across the United States to get it to your job site fast. Most orders arrive on your doorstep within 2 to 4 business days, and for critical project deadlines or emergency line repairs, we offer expedited overnight shipping options at checkout. We stock everything from small 18 AWG to massive 1250 MCM bare copper—and we’re happy to cut it exactly to the foot (on most sizes) or ship it out on full bulk spools.

Yes. High-purity soft-drawn bare copper is naturally resilient to sub-surface corrosion and moisture. It is rated for Direct Burial and serves as the elite choice for underground grounding networks or concrete-embedded Ufer grounding grids.

In the American Wire Gauge system, 4/0 (four-ought) is significantly larger than 2/0 (two-ought). The 4/0 wire contains roughly 60% more copper cross-sectional area, resulting in much lower electrical resistance over long distances and a vastly higher capacity to safely dissipate massive, short-duration fault currents from direct lightning strikes or utility-scale equipment failures.
