It is primarily used as a maximum-capacity 4-wire main feeder line for 200A main panels, commercial subpanels, agricultural buildings, and industrial equipment where a dedicated neutral conductor is required. Because it features built-in interlocking aluminum armor under a waterproof PVC jacket, it can be laid directly in open trenches or encased in concrete without buying or gluing separate PVC conduit pipe.
Under National Electrical Code (NEC Table 310.16) guidelines, 4/0 AWG aluminum cable is rated for 180 Amps at standard 75°C terminal ratings (150 Amps at 60°C and 205 Amps at 90°C). Under NEC 240.4(B) provisions, this cable is protected by a 200 Amp breaker for standard feeder applications.
Always consult with a licensed electrician or local building inspector to verify the correct cable size and local code requirements for your specific project.
When buried at the correct legal depth and kept away from sharp, piercing rocks, a high-quality PVC-jacketed MC cable is engineered to last 30 to 50 years—and often even longer. Because the PVC jacket isolates the metal from moisture, and the aluminum armor protects the wires from physical soil shifts, the components inside essentially sit in a perfectly preserved environment.
If the outer PVC jacket gets sliced open by a sharp rock or a shovel during installation, water can seep inside and travel along the metal armor channels. Over time, constant moisture trapped against the aluminum armor can cause white, powdery corrosion (aluminum oxide) to form. If this corrosion spreads, it can eat away the armor and eventually compromise the wires. This is why it is critical to patch any accidental jacket nicks with heavy-wall, adhesive-lined heat shrink tape before burying the cable.
A 4/0-4C jacketed MC cable is incredibly thick because of its dual protection layers. The outside diameter requires a specialized 2-inch trade-size connector fitting. Before cutting your panel box openings, always measure the exact outer diameter of the specific liquid-tight MC connector you purchased to ensure your punch-out tool matches the fitting threads perfectly.
Yes, but standard residential burial rules do not apply here. For cultivated agricultural land or heavy commercial equipment pathways, you must bury the cable deeper than the standard 18 inches—typically at least 24 to 30 inches deep. This extra depth ensures that deep-earth plows, heavy tilling machinery, and multi-ton tractors cannot compress the soil hard enough to pinch the cable or slice it open.
