3/3C + 18/8C w/ #8 Ground Generator Cable (TC-ER-JP) is an all-in-one, composite power and control tray cable engineered specifically for whole-house standby generator installations (such as Generac, Kohler, and Briggs & Stratton) rated between 17kW and 24kW.

Instead of pulling separate heavy power feeders and individual control wiring through conduit, this composite cable bundles the main 100 Amp 240V power lines, the ground line, and the low-voltage control/sensing conductors under a single, durable outer jacket.

ELECTRICAL AMPACITY & RATING

  • Current Rating: 100 AMPS (based on 75°C terminal temperature limits under NEC rules).

  • Generator Compatibility: Engineered for 17kW to 24kW residential and light commercial air-cooled or liquid-cooled standby generators.

  • Voltage Rating: 600 Volts maximum.

Key Features

  • All-in-One Cable Assembly: Combines high-amperage power feeders, ground, and up to 8 control/utility wires into a single jacketed run, significantly reducing labor and conduit material costs.

  • Type TC-ER-JP Rated: Approved as Tray Cable - Exposed Run with Joist Pull (JP) rating, meaning it can be pulled through joists and open framing without requiring continuous conduit in residential applications (per NEC Article 336).

  • Direct Burial & Outdoor Approved: The heavy-duty PVC outer sheath is sunlight/UV-resistant and rated for direct burial, tray installation, or transition indoors.

  • Flame & Weather Resistance: Rated for cold-bend temperatures down to -40°C and meets strict FT4 / IEEE flame tests.

Cable Layer Architecture (From Core to Outer Sheath)

  1. Power Conductors (3 x 3 AWG): Stranded bare copper cores with THHN/THWN PVC/Nylon insulation (typically color-coded Black, Red, White) for carrying full 240V generator output to the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS).

  2. Ground Conductor (1 x 8 AWG): Stranded bare copper conductor (Green or bare) for equipment grounding.

  3. Control/Sensing Conductors (8 x 18 AWG): Stranded bare copper wires used for utility sensing, battery charging, transfer switch controls, and generator status monitoring.

  4. Fillers & Binder Tape: Non-hygroscopic polypropylene fillers and clear mylar binder tape hold the assembly round and tight.

  5. Outer Jacket: Heavy-duty, sunlight-resistant, direct-burial PVC jacket (typically black or orange).

Technical Specifications

  • Power Conductor Size: 3 AWG Stranded Copper (3 Conductors)

  • Ground Conductor Size: 8 AWG Stranded Copper (1 Conductor)

  • Control Conductor Size: 18 AWG Stranded Copper (8 Conductors)

  • Insulation Type: PVC with Nylon coating (THHN/THWN-2 rated)

  • Jacket Material: Sunlight-resistant, moisture-impervious PVC

  • Overall Outside Diameter: Approx. 0.951 in to 0.98 in

  • Approximate Weight: ~885 lbs per 1000 feet

  • Temperature Limits: 90°C Dry / 75°C Wet (restricted to 75°C terminal rating for 100A ampacity calculations)

  • Standards & Listings: UL Standard 1277 (Type TC-ER), UL 83, FT4/IEEE 1202 Flame Rated, NEC Article 336 (TC-ER-JP), RoHS Compliant

Technical Note Regarding Installation: While this cable is rated for open runs inside joists (JP rating) and direct burial outdoors, always check with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). When transitioning from underground or exposed wall surfaces into enclosures or through walls, approved cable glands or strain-relief fittings designed for Type TC cable must be used to maintain weather-tight seals and electrical bonding.

CABLE TYPE: 3/3C + 18/8C w/ 8 AWG Ground Type TC-ER-JP Multi-Conductor Generator Power & Control Cable (600V, 100A)

AWG, or American Wire Gauge, is the standard system used primarily in North America to measure the diameter of electrical conductors. This system is critical because a wire's size directly impacts its electrical resistance and how much current (ampacity) it can safely carry. A key principle is that the smaller the AWG number, the larger the wire's diameter; for instance, 12 AWG is thicker and can carry more current than 14 AWG. Sizes beyond 0 AWG are referred to as "aught" (e.g., 1/0, 2/0). Selecting the correct AWG is essential for safe electrical installations, preventing overheating, and minimizing voltage drop.
Voltage drop is the natural reduction in electrical potential that occurs as current travels through a circuit, from the power source to a device. This happens because all wires inherently have resistance, which converts some electrical energy into heat, leading to a loss of voltage. While minor voltage drop is normal, excessive amounts can cause problems like dimming lights, slow or overheating motors, and erratic electronic behavior. It can also lead to higher energy consumption and, in severe cases, create safety hazards due to overheating wires. Key factors influencing voltage drop include the wire's length and thickness (gauge), the amount of current flowing through it, and the quality of electrical connections.
In electrical wiring, amps (amperes) measure the rate of electrical current flow. Think of it as the volume of electricity moving through the wire at any given time. Crucially, every electrical wire has an ampacity rating, which is the maximum current it can safely carry continuously without overheating. Exceeding a wire's ampacity can lead to insulation damage and fire hazards, highlighting why proper wire sizing based on expected amperage is vital for safe electrical systems.
A wire's ampacity, or its safe current-carrying capacity, changes with temperature primarily because of two factors. First, the electrical resistance of copper and aluminum wires increases as they get hotter, causing them to generate more heat when current flows. Second, every wire's insulation has a maximum temperature limit; exceeding this can cause degradation and safety hazards. Therefore, in hotter environments, a wire must carry less current to avoid exceeding its insulation's temperature rating. This ensures the wire remains safe and functional, preventing overheating and potential failures.
We aim to provide authentic, precise images of each wire; however, with various product variations, it can be challenging. In such instances, we focus on showcasing the fundamental design. Always refer to the product specifications rather than relying solely on images.
