"Engineered for maximum electrical mass, heavy-duty grounding rings, and critical structural bonding, this 250 MCM Stranded Bare Copper wire is built to handle high-amperage infrastructure demands. Featuring high-purity, soft-drawn (annealed) construction, it provides an ultra-low-impedance path to ground, making it the definitive standard for industrial substations, commercial grid systems, and data center earth shields."

Why Professionals Choose 250 MCM Bare Copper

When project specifications move past standard AWG sizes, 250 MCM (kcmil) is a common choice for heavy commercial service entrances, lightning down-conductors, and subsurface grounding loops. This conductor is engineered to safely absorb and dissipate severe fault currents and lightning surges without breaking down. The uninsulated, stranded construction ensures the cable remains workable for field crews making bends around structural steel or routing through tight trenches. Because it is 99.9% pure copper, it natively resists moisture and harsh soil chemistry, guaranteeing a permanent, maintenance-free grounding grid.

  • Maximum Fault-Current Capacity: 99.9% pure, uninsulated copper provides a massive cross-sectional area to safely redirect high-magnitude short circuits into the earth.

  • Soft-Drawn (Annealed): Thermally treated to relax the copper's crystalline matrix, removing stiff wire memory so installers can easily manipulate the cable around grounding bars and lugs.

  • Direct Burial Resilience: Naturally immune to subsurface moisture and oxidation, removing the need for a protective jacket when cast in concrete or buried directly in soil.

  • Concentric-Lay Stranding: Multi-wire engineering delivers exceptional tensile strength and mechanical ruggedness, defending the wire against crushing or scraping during rough field backfilling.

250 MCM bare copper wire is an ultra-high-capacity conductor used for large-scale commercial, industrial, and utility grounding systems. Thanks to its massive cross-sectional area, it provides an exceptionally low-resistance path to the earth. It is the industry standard for burying main perimeter ground loops around data centers and hospitals, building subsurface substation grids, providing high-rise lightning protection, and grounding heavy-duty industrial transformers.

The nominal outside diameter (OD) of a 250 MCM stranded bare copper wire is approximately 0.574 inches (14.58 mm).

Minimum Requirement: For a single 250 MCM bare copper wire installed purely for physical protection from damage, a 1-1/4 inch PVC or EMT conduit is the standard code minimum for 40% fill.

Recommended: A 1-1/2 inch or 2-inch conduit is strongly recommended for long runs or runs containing multiple 90-degree elbows. At over half an inch thick, 250 MCM copper is incredibly heavy and stiff; a larger pipe dramatically reduces pulling friction and prevents binding.

Yes. This wire is fully rated for direct burial in soil and for direct encasement in heavy structural concrete footings (Ufer grounds). High-purity electrical copper naturally develops a protective patina when exposed to underground elements, making it highly resistant to soil-based chemical corrosion and moisture degradation for decades of reliable performance.

While both solid and stranded copper have the exact same electrical capacity, stranded wire is highly preferred by installers for its flexibility. Solid copper wire in larger gauges is incredibly rigid and behaves like a stiff metal rod in the field. Stranded wire allows installation crews to easily manipulate the conductor, bend it around foundation walls, and cleanly transition it into service panels without kinking or fighting the metal.

Wire America ships directly from regional hubs across the United States to get it to your job site fast. Most orders arrive on your doorstep within 2 to 4 business days, and for critical project deadlines or emergency line repairs, we offer expedited overnight shipping options at checkout. We stock everything from small 18 AWG to massive 1250 MCM bare copper—and we’re happy to cut it exactly to the foot (on most sizes) or ship it out on full bulk spools.
