MG stands for Mica-Glass. It refers to the two layers of fiberglass-reinforced mica tapes used for insulation, which allows the wire to operate at extreme temperatures where other insulators would melt or decompose.
MG wire is rated for continuous operation at temperatures up to 450°C (842°F), with a non-UL maximum rating of up to 538°C in specific applications.
"Better" depends on your application. TGGT (250°C) is the standard for commercial appliances and heaters. MG (450°C) is specifically for "extreme" industrial zones. Using MG for a standard 200°C application is often unnecessary, but it is the required choice for kilns, furnaces, and smelters.
Standard high-temp wires (like TGGT or SRML) use polymers that begin to degrade or "cook" once temperatures consistently stay above 250°C. MG wire utilizes a Mica-Glass composite insulation that is inherently heat-stable; the mica actually thrives in extreme heat. By choosing MG, you are moving away from insulation that slowly decomposes to a solution that is designed to withstand continuous 450°C operation.
MG wire is the standard for high-temperature equipment where ambient temperatures exceed 250°C. It is specifically designed for applications like industrial kilns, blast furnaces, glass-annealing lehrs, and high-heat processing equipment. If your application involves high radiant heat or direct furnace exposure, MG’s 450°C-rated mica-glass construction is the premier choice to prevent insulation breakdown and electrical shorts.
Choosing the right high-temperature wire depends on your maximum operating temperature and the level of flexibility required.
Yes. We carry a comprehensive range of high-temperature wire, including SIS (125°C) SRML (200°C), TGGT (250°C), and MG (450°C). Each product page includes detailed engineering specs, such as strand counts and UL listings.
