2/4 Stranded Copper MC Feeder Cable is a 600V metal-clad feeder cable used for 120V/208V 3-phase 4-wire power distribution, 100A/110A equipment feeders, commercial lighting distribution, and dual-circuit subpanel runs. It features four 2 AWG stranded copper circuit conductors (Black/Red/Blue/White) and one 6 AWG green insulated ground enclosed in an aluminum interlocked armor.
2/3 MC Cable contains three current-carrying conductors (Black/Red/White) plus ground for single-phase 120V/240V split-phase systems or 3-phase 3-wire equipment. 2/4 MC Cable adds a fourth conductor (Blue), enabling full 3-phase 4-wire wye distribution (Black/Red/Blue/White) or running two separate 120V circuits with dedicated neutrals in a single armor sheath.
Yes. Under NEC Article 330, 2/4 MC Cable is fully approved as a subpanel feeder cable in commercial, industrial, and multi-residential structures. Its continuous interlocked metal armor provides full mechanical protection without requiring pipe or conduit.
Per NEC Table 310.16, 2 AWG copper carries a maximum thermal rating of 130 Amps at 90°C. However, because standard breaker lugs and equipment terminals are typically rated for 75°C terminations, 2 AWG copper is sized at 115 Amps. Depending on load calculations, next-standard-fuse rules (NEC 240.4(B)), and derating rules, it is most commonly paired with a 100A, 110A, or 125A circuit breaker.
Yes, in certain installations. When all four conductors carry current simultaneously (such as two single-phase branch circuits sharing a single cable sheath), NEC Table 310.15(C)(1) requires an 80% adjustment factor on the conductor ampacity rating ($115\text{A} \times 0.80 = 92\text{A}$).
In accordance with UL 1569 manufacturing standards for feeder-size MC cable, 2/4 MC Cable includes a 6 AWG green THHN/THWN-2 insulated stranded copper grounding conductor.
Yes. Because the aluminum interlocked armor provides continuous mechanical protection, MC feeder cable is approved under NEC Article 330 to be installed directly inside walls, exposed across ceilings, or laid in cable trays without pulling through pipe or conduit.
Standard 2/4 MC cable with aluminum interlocked armor is designed for dry indoor applications (rated 90°C Dry). For direct burial or wet outdoor environments, a PVC-jacketed MC cable (PVC over armor) or liquid-tight raceway system is required.
Yes. We stock a full selection of lightweight, cost-effective Aluminum MC Cable for commercial and industrial feeder applications. While stranded copper offers higher ampacity per conductor size and smaller overall cable diameters, aluminum MC cable provides significant cost savings and reduced overall weight on long feeder pulls. Note that aluminum conductors typically require upsizing by one or two wire sizes (e.g., 1/0 AWG aluminum to match 2 AWG copper ampacity) and require dual-rated AL7CU/AL9CU terminations.
