This 2 AWG, 3-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable (commonly referred to by the brand name "Romex") is a heavy-duty residential building wire. It is primarily used for high-draw appliances and sub-panel feeds in dry locations. Common applications include wiring for electric furnaces, large heat pumps, and 90A-100A sub-panels in residential dwellings. Because it is NM-B, it is rated specifically for indoor use in protected environments like wall studs or floor joists.
At the 2 AWG size, copper provides superior conductivity and a smaller physical footprint than aluminum equivalents.
According to NEC Article 334.80, NM-B cable must be sized based on the 60°C temperature column in Table 310.16, regardless of the 90°C rating of the internal insulation.
⚠️ PRO TIP: Even though the internal wires are 90°C rated, you cannot use a 115A or 125A breaker for this cable. In most residential applications, 2/3 NM-B is protected by a 90 Amp circuit breaker.
This cable follows standard residential color-coding for 240V/120V systems:
While smaller NM-B gauges are color-coded by jacket (Yellow for 12, Orange for 10), heavy-gauge NM-B like 2 AWG typically features a Black outer jacket. The jacket is made of high-grade PVC that is flame-retardant and moisture-resistant (though not waterproof).
NM-B is highly versatile but has strict code-defined limits to ensure safety:
