Specifically engineered for high-wattage residential electrical systems, this 2 AWG NM-B Copper Building Wire provides a robust solution for interior branch circuits. Featuring two high-conductivity copper conductors and a dedicated grounding wire, this assembly is enclosed in a durable, non-metallic (NM-B) heat-resistant PVC jacket, designed to handle heavy-duty household loads with maximum reliability.

Why Choose 2/3 NM-B Copper Building Wire?

When powering high-demand appliances, conductor integrity and ease of installation are non-negotiable. This 2-conductor (with ground) cable is designed for dry-location interior wiring, offering the superior conductivity of copper in a format that is easy to pull through wooden studs and floor joists without the need for protective conduit in most residential applications.

  • Superior Copper Conductivity: Annealed (soft) copper conductors provide the highest electrical efficiency and lowest resistance for long-term power stability.

  • Streamlined Residential Installation: The smooth, sunlight-resistant PVC jacket reduces friction during pulls through bored holes and along framing members.

  • Simplified Grounding: Includes a dedicated bare copper ground wire to ensure system safety and code compliance for heavy branch circuits.

  • High-Grade Insulation: Conductors are insulated with heat-resistant PVC and topped with a clear nylon jacket (THHN/THWN-2) for enhanced durability.

This 2 AWG, 3-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable (commonly referred to by the brand name "Romex") is a heavy-duty residential building wire. It is primarily used for high-draw appliances and sub-panel feeds in dry locations. Common applications include wiring for electric furnaces, large heat pumps, and 90A-100A sub-panels in residential dwellings. Because it is NM-B, it is rated specifically for indoor use in protected environments like wall studs or floor joists.

At the 2 AWG size, copper provides superior conductivity and a smaller physical footprint than aluminum equivalents.

  • Integrated Ground: This cable includes three insulated current-carrying conductors and one bare equipment grounding conductor, simplifying the wiring of 120/240V circuits.
  • Simplified Installation: Unlike THHN wire, which must be pulled through conduit, NM-B cable can be run through bored holes in studs without a raceway (where permitted by local code), significantly reducing labor time.
  • Heat Resistance: The "B" in NM-B signifies that the internal conductors are rated for 90°C, though the overall ampacity must be calculated at the 60°C column per NEC requirements.

According to NEC Article 334.80, NM-B cable must be sized based on the 60°C temperature column in Table 310.16, regardless of the 90°C rating of the internal insulation.

  • 60°C Rating: 95 Amps
  • 75°C/90°C Rating (For Derating Only): 115A / 130A

⚠️ PRO TIP: Even though the internal wires are 90°C rated, you cannot use a 115A or 125A breaker for this cable. In most residential applications, 2/3 NM-B is protected by a 90 Amp circuit breaker.

This cable follows standard residential color-coding for 240V/120V systems:

  1. Black: Hot (Phase A)
  2. Red: Hot (Phase B)
  3. White: Neutral
  4. Bare Copper: Ground

While smaller NM-B gauges are color-coded by jacket (Yellow for 12, Orange for 10), heavy-gauge NM-B like 2 AWG typically features a Black outer jacket. The jacket is made of high-grade PVC that is flame-retardant and moisture-resistant (though not waterproof).

NM-B is highly versatile but has strict code-defined limits to ensure safety:

  • Indoor Only: It cannot be used outdoors or in wet/damp locations. It is strictly for "dry locations only."
  • Conduit Requirements: While it doesn't require conduit inside walls, it must be protected by a raceway or sleeve if exposed in areas where it is subject to physical damage (like a garage wall).
  • Bending Radius: Because 2 AWG copper is thick and stiff, the cable must not be bent to a radius less than 5 times the diameter of the cable to avoid damaging the insulation or the copper strands.
