This 2 AWG, 1-conductor (single conductor) shielded substation control cable is a heavy-duty utility cable engineered for demanding supervisory control, metering, and protective relaying circuits. Built to strict ICEA S-73-532 standards, it features a composite 20/10 PE/PVC insulation system and a high-performance copper tape shield. This construction provides exceptional dielectric strength and critical shielding against transient voltage surges and electromagnetic interference (EMI) typical in high-voltage substation switchyards.

Key Features of 2/1 Shielded 20/10 Substation Cable

  • Heavy-Duty 20/10 Composite Insulation: The conductor is insulated with 20 mils of Natural Polyethylene (PE) for primary electrical strength and low dielectric loss, paired with a 10 mil Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) outer skin layer for color coding and robust physical protection.

  • Superior EMI/RFI Shielding: Wrapped with a helically applied 5-mil bare copper tape shield (minimum 20% overlap). This provides a low-resistance path to ground, suppressing dangerous high-frequency transients and induced magnetic/electrostatic currents caused by breaker operations and inductive switching.

  • Utility-Grade Durability: Protected by a rugged, flame-retardant, and sunlight-resistant black PVC jacket. This enables versatile installation paths—approved for wet or dry conditions, direct burial, open air, cable trays, troughs, or embedded conduit networks.

  • Corrosion-Resistant Base: Features a premium Class B concentrically stranded bare copper conductor conforming to ASTM B3 and B8, balancing structural stability with industrial installation flexibility.

Common Applications

  • Substation Control Networks: Transmitting digital or analog signals between control houses, switchyard equipment, marshalling kiosks, and terminal cabinets.

  • Protective Relaying & Telemetry: Connecting current transformers (CTs), potential transformers (PTs), and circuit breaker trip circuits where false signals from ambient electrical noise must be prevented.

  • Utility Metering & Monitoring: Long-run data interconnects and power monitoring loops operating in high thermal or electrical stress zones near extra-high-voltage (EHV) busses.

  • Industrial Heavy Duty Control: General-purpose, low-impedance control functions in power generation plants, chemical refineries, and heavy manufacturing facilities.

Technical Specifications

  • Conductor Size: 2 AWG

  • Number of Conductors: 1 (Single Conductor)

  • Conductor Material: Bare Soft Annealed Copper (Class B Stranded)

  • Insulation System: 20 mils PE / 10 mils PVC (Total 30 mils)

  • Shielding: 0.005" (5 mil) Helical Bare Copper Tape Shield

  • Jacket: Flame-Retardant, Moisture- & Sunlight-Resistant Black PVC

  • Voltage Rating: 600V (Available up to 1000V for heavy inductive breaking profiles)

  • Temperature Rating: 75°C Wet or Dry

  • Compliance Standards: ICEA S-73-532 / NEMA WC 57, ASTM B3 & B8, RoHS Compliant

Technical Note: Rocketing high-voltage substation standards (especially 138 kV and above) often require copper tape shields to be grounded at multiple points (at minimum both ends) to mitigate high-frequency transient voltages produced by switchyard arcs, rather than grounding at only the source end to prevent low-frequency ground loops. Verify grounding specs against the specific utility engineering layout.

AWG, or American Wire Gauge, is the standard system used primarily in North America to measure the diameter of electrical conductors. This system is critical because a wire's size directly impacts its electrical resistance and how much current (ampacity) it can safely carry. A key principle is that the smaller the AWG number, the larger the wire's diameter; for instance, 12 AWG is thicker and can carry more current than 14 AWG. Sizes beyond 0 AWG are referred to as "aught" (e.g., 1/0, 2/0). Selecting the correct AWG is essential for safe electrical installations, preventing overheating, and minimizing voltage drop.
Voltage drop is the natural reduction in electrical potential that occurs as current travels through a circuit, from the power source to a device. This happens because all wires inherently have resistance, which converts some electrical energy into heat, leading to a loss of voltage. While minor voltage drop is normal, excessive amounts can cause problems like dimming lights, slow or overheating motors, and erratic electronic behavior. It can also lead to higher energy consumption and, in severe cases, create safety hazards due to overheating wires. Key factors influencing voltage drop include the wire's length and thickness (gauge), the amount of current flowing through it, and the quality of electrical connections.
In electrical wiring, amps (amperes) measure the rate of electrical current flow. Think of it as the volume of electricity moving through the wire at any given time. Crucially, every electrical wire has an ampacity rating, which is the maximum current it can safely carry continuously without overheating. Exceeding a wire's ampacity can lead to insulation damage and fire hazards, highlighting why proper wire sizing based on expected amperage is vital for safe electrical systems.
A wire's ampacity, or its safe current-carrying capacity, changes with temperature primarily because of two factors. First, the electrical resistance of copper and aluminum wires increases as they get hotter, causing them to generate more heat when current flows. Second, every wire's insulation has a maximum temperature limit; exceeding this can cause degradation and safety hazards. Therefore, in hotter environments, a wire must carry less current to avoid exceeding its insulation's temperature rating. This ensures the wire remains safe and functional, preventing overheating and potential failures.
We aim to provide authentic, precise images of each wire; however, with various product variations, it can be challenging. In such instances, we focus on showcasing the fundamental design. Always refer to the product specifications rather than relying solely on images.
