2/0 AWG 3-Conductor Aluminum Generator Cable with Ground and 18 AWG 9-Conductor Control Bundle is a specialized, all-in-one power and intelligence composite cable engineered for standby home generators and light commercial backup systems. Designed to streamline complex multi-conduit runs into a single pulling operation, this dual-rated line is optimized to support 26kW to 28kW generator units, supplying up to 135 Amps of continuous emergency load capacity under a maximum 600V operating threshold.

This heavy-duty hybrid asset combines raw electrical power distribution with low-voltage system logic inside a rugged, sunlight-resistant, direct-burial polyvinyl chloride (PVC) outer jacket. The power core features three robust 2/0 AWG compact-stranded aluminum conductors accompanied by an insulated aluminum ground. Nestled alongside this main power run is a built-in 18 AWG 9-conductor control cable wiring harness, providing the necessary paths for automated utility sensing, battery charging, and generator command intelligence without requiring a separate layout pipe.

ELECTRICAL AMPACITY & GENERATOR RUN RATINGS

Engineered to match the high-demand continuous loads of automated emergency standby equipment, this composite cable features distinct power limits based on insulation parameters and structural cooling boundaries:

  • Maximum Current Capacity (75°C Terminations): 135 AMPS

This rating complies with National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 310 parameters for Type THHN/THWN-2 aluminum conductors terminated into standard 75°C equipment lugs.

  • Power Output Handling Range: 26 kW to 28 kW

Optimized explicitly for single-phase 240V residential generator applications, providing safe mechanical and thermal headroom during cold starts and sudden utility transfer load spikes.

Key Features

  • All-In-One Unified Design: Combines heavy aluminum power conductors and a multi-conductor copper control bundle within a single outer jacket, slashing trench labor, minimizing conduit jam scenarios, and eliminating multiple pipe runs.

  • Compact-Stranded AA-8000 Aluminum Alloy: Power conductors are extruded using advanced AA-8000 series aluminum alloy, providing excellent flexibility, reduced cable weight, and highly reliable connections at standard equipment lugs.

  • Integrated 18/9C Copper Control Core: Features a dedicated 9-conductor, 18 AWG copper signaling bundle that provides smooth transmission for automated automatic transfer switch (ATS) communication, smart digital monitoring, oil pressure sensors, and float chargers.

  • Dual-Rated THHN / THWN-2 Elements: Internal power lines are insulated with tough polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and topped with a slick nylon armor skin, rated for dry environments up to 90°C and wet subterranean environments up to 75°C.

  • Direct-Burial Outer Armor Jacket: Protected by an industrial-grade, sunlight-resistant, moisture-impervious PVC outer shield. This jacket allows the cable to be run inside standard PVC conduit, heavy metal raceways, or laid directly into open underground trenches where code permits.

Common Applications

  • Automated Standby Generator Connections: Linking 26kW through 28kW residential and light industrial generators safely to their respective Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS).

  • Whole-House Backup Infrastructure: Running high-amperage backup links for estate homes, rural agricultural facilities, and critical municipal pump sites.

  • Multi-Zone ATS Communication Paths: Providing the unified power feed and remote-start signaling circuit between isolated generator docks and internal building sub-panels.

Cable Component Architecture (Cross-Section)

  1. Main Power Elements: 3 independent 2/0 AWG compact-stranded aluminum conductors.

  2. Equipment Ground: 1 insulated matching aluminum ground wire.

  3. Control Bundle: 9 independent 18 AWG solid or stranded copper control lines enclosed in an inner protective binder wrap.

  4. Outer Jacket: Rugged, moisture-proof, UV-resistant Black PVC outer skin.

Technical Specifications

  • Power Conductor Size: 2/0 AWG

  • Number of Power Conductors: 3 (Typically designated Black, Red, White for Single-Phase 120/240V systems)

  • Power Conductor Material: AA-8000 Series Aluminum Alloy

  • Ground Conductor Size: Fully sized aluminum ground

  • Control Bundle Configuration: 18 AWG / 9-Conductor (Copper)

  • Voltage Rating: 600 Volts Maximum

  • Continuous Current Capacity: 135 Amps (Based on 75°C termination limits)

  • Insulation Type: PVC with Nylon Skin (THHN / THWN-2)

  • Jacket Type: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) - Sunlight Resistant, Direct Burial Rated

  • Compliance Standards: UL Listed, NEC Article 310, NEC Article 445 (Generators), RoHS Compliant

Technical Note: To prevent localized oxidation and terminal failures over time, all aluminum-to-copper transitions or connections at the generator terminal blocks must be coated with a certified anti-oxidant joint compound (such as Noalox or Penetrox). Tighten all mechanical terminal lugs strictly to the manufacturer's specified inch-pounds of torque using a calibrated torque wrench.

CABLE TYPE: 2/0-3C Aluminum Power with Ground + 18 AWG 9-Conductor Copper Control Composite Generator Cable (600V Rated)

DISCLAIMER: The technical information provided is for general reference only. Emergency standby generator systems and automatic utility transfer switches must strictly adhere to NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), local utility company parameters, and the specific manufacturer’s wiring schematics. AWG, or American Wire Gauge, is the standard system used primarily in North America to measure the diameter of electrical conductors. This system is critical because a wire's size directly impacts its electrical resistance and how much current (ampacity) it can safely carry. A key principle is that the smaller the AWG number, the larger the wire's diameter; for instance, 12 AWG is thicker and can carry more current than 14 AWG. Sizes beyond 0 AWG are referred to as "aught" (e.g., 1/0, 2/0). Selecting the correct AWG is essential for safe electrical installations, preventing overheating, and minimizing voltage drop.
Voltage drop is the natural reduction in electrical potential that occurs as current travels through a circuit, from the power source to a device. This happens because all wires inherently have resistance, which converts some electrical energy into heat, leading to a loss of voltage. While minor voltage drop is normal, excessive amounts can cause problems like dimming lights, slow or overheating motors, and erratic electronic behavior. It can also lead to higher energy consumption and, in severe cases, create safety hazards due to overheating wires. Key factors influencing voltage drop include the wire's length and thickness (gauge), the amount of current flowing through it, and the quality of electrical connections.
In electrical wiring, amps (amperes) measure the rate of electrical current flow. Think of it as the volume of electricity moving through the wire at any given time. Crucially, every electrical wire has an ampacity rating, which is the maximum current it can safely carry continuously without overheating. Exceeding a wire's ampacity can lead to insulation damage and fire hazards, highlighting why proper wire sizing based on expected amperage is vital for safe electrical systems.
A wire's ampacity, or its safe current-carrying capacity, changes with temperature primarily because of two factors. First, the electrical resistance of copper and aluminum wires increases as they get hotter, causing them to generate more heat when current flows. Second, every wire's insulation has a maximum temperature limit; exceeding this can cause degradation and safety hazards. Therefore, in hotter environments, a wire must carry less current to avoid exceeding its insulation's temperature rating. This ensures the wire remains safe and functional, preventing overheating and potential failures.
We aim to provide authentic, precise images of each wire; however, with various product variations, it can be challenging. In such instances, we focus on showcasing the fundamental design. Always refer to the product specifications rather than relying solely on images.
