Product Details

This 16 AWG, 9-conductor shielded VNTC (Vinyl Nylon Tray Cable) is a high-performance, dual-rated Type TC-ER industrial cable. Built for multi-circuit control and instrumentation, it features a 16 AWG conductor gauge for higher current capacity and 100% foil shielding to maintain signal integrity. The TC-ER (Exposed Run) rating provides significant installation flexibility by allowing the cable to transition from a tray to equipment without the need for conduit.

Key Features of 16-9 Shielded VNTC (TC-ER)

  • Exposed Run (TC-ER) Rated: This cable meets the rigorous crush and impact standards of UL 1277. Per NEC 336.10, it can be routed outside of a cable tray to the equipment it connects for up to 6 feet without continuous support or conduit, lowering labor costs.

  • 100% EMI/RFI Shielding: Equipped with an overall aluminum foil-polyester tape shield and a tinned copper drain wire. This construction ensures total coverage, preventing electromagnetic interference from surrounding motor leads and high-frequency machinery.

  • Enhanced Conductor Capacity: The 16 AWG gauge provides lower resistance and higher current-carrying capacity than 18 AWG, making it ideal for longer circuit runs where voltage drop might be a concern.

  • Flexible TFFN Conductors: Utilizing TFFN (Thermoplastic Flexible Fixture Nylon) stranded conductors ensures the cable remains manageable during installation, making it easier to pull through trays and terminate in crowded control enclosures.

Common Applications

  • Multi-Point Control Logic: Connecting PLC cabinets to machinery requiring several control points, such as sensor arrays, solenoids, and motor starters.

  • Industrial Automation: Ideal for robotic cells and automated assembly lines where conductors must drop from overhead trays directly to machine-mounted junction boxes.

  • Utility & Power Monitoring: Managing telemetry, status signaling, and control logic in power plants and substations where electrical noise is constant.

  • Process Instrumentation: Suitable for multi-point feedback and sensor monitoring in refineries, chemical plants, and water treatment facilities.

  • Conductor Material: Bare Annealed Copper (Stranded)

  • Insulation: TFFN (PVC with Nylon Skin)

  • Shielding: Overall Aluminum Foil-Polyester Tape (100% coverage)

  • Drain Wire: Tinned Copper

  • Jacket: Flame-Retardant, Sunlight-Resistant PVC (Black)

  • Ratings: 600V | 90°C Dry | Type TC-ER

  • Compliance: UL 1277, UL 66, IEEE 1202, RoHS Compliant

Technical Note: To maximize the effectiveness of the shield, the tinned copper drain wire should be landed at a ground bus at the source end only. This configuration prevents ground loops. Given the 9-conductor 16 AWG construction, ensure that tray load and conduit fill calculations are verified prior to installation due to the cable's specific diameter and weight.

AWG, or American Wire Gauge, is the standard system used primarily in North America to measure the diameter of electrical conductors. This system is critical because a wire's size directly impacts its electrical resistance and how much current (ampacity) it can safely carry. A key principle is that the smaller the AWG number, the larger the wire's diameter; for instance, 12 AWG is thicker and can carry more current than 14 AWG. Sizes beyond 0 AWG are referred to as "aught" (e.g., 1/0, 2/0). Selecting the correct AWG is essential for safe electrical installations, preventing overheating, and minimizing voltage drop.
Voltage drop is the natural reduction in electrical potential that occurs as current travels through a circuit, from the power source to a device. This happens because all wires inherently have resistance, which converts some electrical energy into heat, leading to a loss of voltage. While minor voltage drop is normal, excessive amounts can cause problems like dimming lights, slow or overheating motors, and erratic electronic behavior. It can also lead to higher energy consumption and, in severe cases, create safety hazards due to overheating wires. Key factors influencing voltage drop include the wire's length and thickness (gauge), the amount of current flowing through it, and the quality of electrical connections.
In electrical wiring, amps (amperes) measure the rate of electrical current flow. Think of it as the volume of electricity moving through the wire at any given time. Crucially, every electrical wire has an ampacity rating, which is the maximum current it can safely carry continuously without overheating. Exceeding a wire's ampacity can lead to insulation damage and fire hazards, highlighting why proper wire sizing based on expected amperage is vital for safe electrical systems.
A wire's ampacity, or its safe current-carrying capacity, changes with temperature primarily because of two factors. First, the electrical resistance of copper and aluminum wires increases as they get hotter, causing them to generate more heat when current flows. Second, every wire's insulation has a maximum temperature limit; exceeding this can cause degradation and safety hazards. Therefore, in hotter environments, a wire must carry less current to avoid exceeding its insulation's temperature rating. This ensures the wire remains safe and functional, preventing overheating and potential failures.
We aim to provide authentic, precise images of each wire; however, with various product variations, it can be challenging. In such instances, we focus on showcasing the fundamental design. Always refer to the product specifications rather than relying solely on images.
