VFD cable is a specialized multi-conductor cable designed specifically for the connection between a Variable Frequency Drive and an AC motor. Unlike standard cable, VFD cable is engineered to handle the "dirty power" (harmful electrical noise and voltage spikes) created by the drive's high-speed switching.
Due to its 16 AWG size, this cable is perfect for lower-horsepower industrial motors used in:
Precision Conveyor Systems: Where avoiding signal interference with optical sensors is critical.
Commercial HVAC Fans and Pumps: For maintaining quiet, efficient operation.
Automated Packaging Machinery: Where repeated movement and high-frequency control are standard.
It is not recommended. Standard cables lack the specific shielding and insulation thickness required for VFD applications. Using standard wire can lead to "motor bearing fluting" (premature bearing failure), cable insulation breakdown, and interference with nearby control sensors or communication lines.
VFD systems frequently experience "reflected waves," which are high-voltage spikes that can reach over 2000V. Standard THHN wire insulation can carbonize or "melt" under these conditions. Our 16/4 VFD cable features specialized XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation that is thermally stable and specifically designed to withstand these corona discharge events without degrading.
Yes. This cable is UL-Listed as TC-ER (Exposed Run). This rating means the cable has passed stringent crush and impact resistance tests. In many jurisdictions, this allows you to run the cable from the tray to the motor (up to 6 feet) without the need for additional rigid conduit, saving significant labor and material costs.
Note: We recommend confirming with your local Electrical Inspector (AHJ) before finalizing the installation to ensure 100% compliance with regional safety codes.
VFDs use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control motor speed, which essentially turns the cable into a high-powered radio transmitter. Without a shield, this electromagnetic interference (EMI) can "bleed" into nearby sensor wires and PLCs, causing ghost signals and system errors. Our 16/4 VFD cable uses a foil shield and tinned copper braid shield to trap this noise and drain it safely to ground.
The fourth conductor in this cable serves as a dedicated full-sized ground. In a VFD circuit, a consistent and reliable return path for common-mode current is critical. This ground wire helps prevent "stray" voltage from discharging through your motor bearings, which otherwise causes "pitting" and eventual bearing seizure.
