14 AWG 5-Conductor VNTC (Vinyl Nylon Tray Cable) with Custom Color Coding is an industrial-grade, multi-conductor power, control, and signaling cable designed for installation in commercial wireways, cable trays, and structural conduits. Featuring five 14 AWG conductors twisted into a dense, round core, this specific variation replaces standard phasing colors with a highly requested industrial sequencing layout: Black, Red, Blue, Orange, and Yellow. Utilizing premium THHN/THWN-2 inner conductor insulation wrapped in a heavy-duty, sunlight-resistant Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) outer jacket, this configuration provides a durable, moisture-resistant wiring system optimized for specialized multi-phase networks, industrial machinery controls, complex automation loops, and multi-circuit utility runs.

AMPACITY RATINGS (NEC 310.16)

  • 60°C Terminal Rating: 15 AMPS This is the baseline engineering safety rating. Use this value for final circuit sizing under normal operating conditions when connecting to standard equipment terminals or legacy breaker lugs restricted to 60°C constraints.

  • 75°C Terminal Rating: 20 AMPS This is the standard engineering design rating. Use this value for modern industrial terminal configurations, as it represents the typical maximum operational ampacity for a 14 AWG copper conductor under normal code constraints.

  • 90°C Terminal Rating: 25 AMPS This is the maximum capacity rating. Use this value strictly as the baseline calculation factor when adjusting or derating for high ambient operating temperatures, or when bundling multiple tray cables together in packed industrial raceways.

Key Features

  • Industrial Round Profile Construction: The twisted-conductor architecture maximizes physical roundness and structural symmetry, providing uniform physical strength and effortless pull-ins through long conduit layouts or multi-bend raceways.

  • Dual THHN / THWN-2 Conductor Insulation: Inner copper conductors are wrapped in high-dielectric PVC and topped with a rugged clear nylon skin. This dual-layer architecture ensures superior resistance to oil, gasoline, moisture, and insulation scraping during difficult installations.

  • Direct Burial & Sunlight Resistant: Protected by an extruded, flame-retardant outer PVC jacket that forms an impermeable barrier against harsh ambient conditions, making it safe for open air tray runs, direct direct-burial trenching, or wet environments.

  • Highly Conductive Bare Copper: Manufactured with high-purity, soft-annealed stranded bare copper conductors to deliver optimal electrical conductivity, minimal line resistance, and sufficient physical flexibility for long pulled runs.

  • Rigorous Industrial Flame Ratings: Engineered to prevent the migration of fire across open structural paths, fully certified to pass the demanding IEEE 1202 / UL 1685 vertical tray flame tests.

Common Applications

  • Industrial Control & Signaling: Routing digital command inputs, complex PLC loops, multi-stage relay logic tracks, and automated sensor returns in manufacturing plants, wastewater treatment zones, and assembly environments.

  • Lighting & Power Branch Circuits: Supplying continuous power to specialized phase configurations requiring distinct tracer lines, multi-wire branches with dedicated indicator lines, emergency lighting pathways, and industrial machinery sub-circuits.

  • Conduit and Wireway Routing: Pulling multi-circuit infrastructure connections through structural conduits, commercial utility tunnels, underground duct banks, or open-air wire mesh trays.

  • Hazardous Environment Deployment: Approved under strict National Electrical Code provisions for installation within Class I, Division 2 hazardous industrial locations.

Circuit Identification: Custom 5-Conductor Phasing

  • Conductor 1: Black

  • Conductor 2: Red

  • Conductor 3: Blue

  • Conductor 4: Orange

  • Conductor 5: Yellow

  • Note: VNTC constructions typically include a continuous printed identification code on the surface of the jacket for circuit tracking.

Technical Specifications

  • Conductor Size: 14 AWG

  • Number of Power Conductors: 5

  • Conductor Type: Stranded Bare Copper

  • Insulation Material: PVC with Nylon Skin (THHN/THWN-2)

  • Shielding: None (Unshielded)

  • Jacket Material: PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) - Black

  • Voltage Rating: 600 Volts RMS

  • Maximum Temperature Rating: 90°C Dry / 90°C Wet Continuous Operating

  • Flame Test Ratings: IEEE 1202, UL 1685 Vertical Tray Flame Test, FT4

  • Compliance Standards: UL 1277 (Type TC), NEC Article 336, Type THHN/THWN-2 Conductors, RoHS Compliant

Technical Note: When engineering layouts with 14-5 VNTC tray cable, calculations must balance the 14 AWG overcurrent protection limitations dictated by the National Electrical Code. Per NEC Article 240.4(D), the maximum overcurrent protection (circuit breaker or fuse rating) for 14 AWG copper is strictly capped at 15 Amps under standard conditions, regardless of the 90°C calculation overhead. The higher 25-Amp threshold in the 90°C column must be used strictly as your baseline calculation factor when evaluating ampacity adjustments due to high ambient heat or multi-cable tray bundling factors.

CABLE TYPE: 14 AWG / 5-Conductor Stranded Round THHN/PVC Type TC Tray Cable (Black, Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow)

This 14 AWG, 5-conductor cable is a powerhouse for industrial and commercial power distribution. It is primarily used for control circuits, signal transmission, and small motor leads. Because it carries the TC-ER (Tray Cable - Exposed Run) rating, it is specifically designed to transition from a cable tray to the equipment or device without the need for conduit, provided it is supported and protected from physical damage.

  • TC-ER (Exposed Run): This is a rigorous UL rating that proves the cable has the crush and impact resistance necessary to be run outside of a tray or conduit for a limited distance (typically up to 6 feet, though local codes vary).
  • JP (Joist Pull): This indicates the cable is rated for being pulled through wood joists. This is a critical rating for installers working in commercial wood-frame construction, ensuring the jacket is durable enough to withstand being pulled through rough-cut lumber without tearing.

The "THHN/PVC" designation describes the two-layer protection of the individual conductors and the outer jacket:

  1. Conductors (THHN/THWN-2): Each of the five conductors is insulated with PVC and topped with a clear nylon skin. This makes the wires heat-resistant (90°C in both wet and dry conditions) and highly resistant to oil and gasoline.
  2. Outer Jacket (PVC): The overall jacket is Flame Retardant Polyvinyl Chloride, which provides excellent sunlight resistance (suitable for outdoor use) and protection against moisture and chemical corrosion.

In a standard 14/05 Tray Cable, the conductors follow the industrial color code:

  1. Black (Phase/Hot)
  2. Red (Phase/Hot)
  3. Blue (Phase/Hot or Control)
  4. Orange (Phase/Hot or Control)
  5. Yellow (Phase/Hot or Control)
Note: Depending on the specific manufacturer, some 5-conductor cables may include a Green ground wire instead of the Yellow. Always verify the internal color sequence for your specific grounding requirements.

According to NEC Table 310.16, 14 AWG copper at 90°C has an allowable ampacity of 25 Amps. However, per NEC 240.4(D), the overcurrent protection (circuit breaker) for 14 AWG copper cannot exceed 15 Amps.

⚠️ DESIGN NOTE: When using all 5 conductors as current-carrying wires, you must apply Derating Factors per NEC Table 310.15(C)(1). For 4 to 6 current-carrying conductors, you must reduce the ampacity to 80% of the 90°C rating.
