"The industry standard for lightweight, cost-effective subpanel feeds, commercial equipment power connections, and branch circuit wiring. Engineered for reliable power distribution inside conduit and raceways, this 1000 MCM compact-stranded aluminum wire features triple THHN (dry), THWN-2 (wet), and CSA T90 temperature ratings. Protected by a heat- and moisture-resistant PVC insulation and a slick, abrasion-resistant nylon outer jacket, it pulls smoothly without requiring pulling lubricant."

Key Features & Benefits: 1000 MCM Aluminum THHN / THWN-2 Building Wire

1000 MCM Aluminum THHN/THWN-2/T90 electrical wire delivers dependable 600V power distribution for secondary panels, heavy equipment, and branch circuits at a fraction of the weight and cost of copper conductors. Designed for installation in conduit, cable trays, and approved raceways, it provides a reliable, code-compliant solution for commercial buildings, workshop circuits, and agricultural equipment. Featuring compact-stranded AA-8000 series aluminum alloy conductors, 1000 MCM THHN offers exceptional flexibility and long-term connection reliability. The durable PVC insulation and slick nylon jacket provide high resistance against heat, moisture, gasoline, oil, and mechanical friction during tough conduit pulls.

  • Dual 90°C Wet/Dry Rating: Dual-rated as THHN for dry locations up to 90°C and THWN-2 for wet or dry locations up to 90°C (600V maximum).

  • AA-8000 Series Aluminum Alloy: Manufactured with high-grade compact-stranded AA-8000 series aluminum for dependable electrical conductivity, reduced weight, and easier handling.

  • Cable Tray (CT) Approved: Approved for use in cable trays (1/0 AWG and larger) as well as conduit and raceways.

  • Low-Friction Nylon Outer Jacket: Abrasion-, heat-, and moisture-resistant PVC insulation encapsulated in a clear, slick nylon jacket that allows installation without pulling lubricant.

  • Cut to Length by the Foot: Order only the exact footage required for your run, eliminating jobsite waste and unused spools.

1000 MCM Aluminum THHN/THWN-2 wire is a single-conductor building wire commonly used for branch circuits, feeders, and service entrance conductors in commercial, industrial, and residential applications. It is designed to be pulled through conduit (PVC, EMT, or rigid metal) or run in cable trays for circuits supplying motors, heavy HVAC units, subpanels, and general branch power.

Under NEC guidelines, 1000 MCM aluminum wire is rated at 445 Amps at 75°C and 500 Amps at 90°C (375 Amps at 60°C). When sizing overcurrent protection (circuit breakers) for standard equipment terminals rated at 75°C, 1000 MCM aluminum is typically paired with a 400 Amp or 450 Amp breaker rating depending on terminal equipment specifications and circuit requirements.

THHN/THWN-2 is an acronym system defining the wire's insulation materials, temperature ratings, and location approvals under National Electrical Code (NEC) standards:

  • T (Thermoplastic): High-grade PVC synthetic insulation covering the conductor.
  • HH (High Heat Resistant): Rated for high-temperature environments up to 90°C (194°F) in dry locations.
  • W (Water/Moisture Resistant): Rated for wet, damp, or underground conduit installations.
  • N (Nylon): Tough outer jacket that protects against oil, gasoline, and friction during conduit pulls.
  • -2 (Dual 90°C Rating): Indicates the wire maintains its full 90°C rating in both wet and dry locations (unlike older THWN wire which dropped to 75°C in wet conditions).

Yes, but it must be installed inside an approved conduit or raceway (such as Schedule 40/80 PVC, EMT, or Rigid Metal Conduit). Because it carries a dual THHN/THWN-2 rating, the wire is fully rated for wet, damp, and underground conduit locations. However, it is not rated for direct burial straight in earth without conduit—if your project requires direct burial without conduit, you will need a direct-burial cable like URD or USE-2 instead.

Wire America is a trusted supplier of Aluminum THHN/THWN-2 in sizes 8 AWG through 1000 MCM. We ship directly from our strategic regional hubs located across the United States, delivering most orders right to your shop or job site within 2 to 4 business days.
