The industry standard for 30-amp residential circuits, this 10 AWG NM-B Copper Building Wire is purpose-built for mid-range power distribution in modern homes. Engineered with two insulated copper conductors and a dedicated bare ground, this cable is instantly identifiable by its high-visibility orange jacket, ensuring quick circuit identification for both installers and inspectors.

Why Choose 10/3 NM-B Copper Building Wire?

This 2-conductor (plus ground) configuration is a fundamental component of residential wiring, offering the perfect balance between high ampacity and manageable flexibility. The Type NM-B designation allows for rapid deployment through interior wood-frame structures without the need for conduit, significantly reducing labor time on the job site.

  • High-Visibility Color Coding: The orange PVC jacket serves as a permanent visual indicator that the circuit is 10 AWG, helping to prevent wiring errors and ensuring code compliance at a glance.

  • Superior Copper Integrity: Annealed (soft) copper conductors provide the reliable electrical performance and low resistance necessary for sustained high-wattage loads.

  • Friction-Reducing Jacket: The outer PVC sheath is designed with a slick finish to glide through bored holes in studs and joists without snagging or tearing.

  • Dual-Layer Protection: Conductors are shielded with heat-resistant PVC and topped with a clear nylon jacket (THHN/THWN-2) for enhanced abrasion resistance during the pull.

This 10 AWG, 3-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable is the standard residential choice for high-power 120/240V branch circuits. It is most frequently used for appliances that require both a neutral and a ground, such as electric clothes dryers and large window air conditioning units. It is also commonly used for 240V woodworking machinery and small sub-panel feeds in residential workshops.

In the mid-2000s, the industry standardized NM-B jacket colors to help electrical inspectors and contractors identify wire gauges at a glance.

  • Orange Jacket: Specifically identifies 10 AWG wire.
  • Safety & Compliance: The orange color ensures that a 30-amp circuit is not accidentally wired with 12 AWG (yellow) or 14 AWG (white) wire, which could lead to overheating and fire hazards.
  • Pulling Efficiency: The jacket is treated with a specialized lubricant coating to reduce the effort required to pull the cable through bored holes in wooden studs.

According to NEC Article 334.80, NM-B cable must be rated using the 60°C temperature column of Table 310.16. Even though the internal conductors often have 90°C rated insulation, the overall assembly is restricted to the 60°C rating.

  • 60°C Rating: 30 Amps
  • Max Circuit Breaker Size: 30 Amps

⚠️ PRO TIP: 10/3 NM-B is almost exclusively paired with a 30 Amp double-pole breaker. Using a larger breaker on this wire gauge is a code violation and poses a significant safety risk.

This "3-conductor" cable actually contains four total wires (three insulated and one bare ground):

  1. Black: Hot (Line 1)
  2. Red: Hot (Line 2)
  3. White: Neutral
  4. Bare Copper: Ground

The 10 AWG conductors are typically solid copper in NM-B configurations, providing excellent "memory" when bending and tucking wires into an electrical box, ensuring they stay in place once shaped.

Proper installation is key to maintaining the integrity of the 600V rating:

  • Dry Locations Only: NM-B is strictly for indoor use. It cannot be used in damp or wet locations, such as underground conduit or exposed outdoor runs, as the paper separators inside the jacket will absorb moisture.
  • Stapling & Support: The cable must be supported by staples or straps within 12 inches of every box and at intervals not exceeding 4.5 feet.
  • Bending Radius: To avoid damaging the copper or insulation, the bending radius should not be less than 5 times the diameter of the cable.
