This 10 AWG, 3-conductor Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable is the standard residential choice for high-power 120/240V branch circuits. It is most frequently used for appliances that require both a neutral and a ground, such as electric clothes dryers and large window air conditioning units. It is also commonly used for 240V woodworking machinery and small sub-panel feeds in residential workshops.
In the mid-2000s, the industry standardized NM-B jacket colors to help electrical inspectors and contractors identify wire gauges at a glance.
According to NEC Article 334.80, NM-B cable must be rated using the 60°C temperature column of Table 310.16. Even though the internal conductors often have 90°C rated insulation, the overall assembly is restricted to the 60°C rating.
⚠️ PRO TIP: 10/3 NM-B is almost exclusively paired with a 30 Amp double-pole breaker. Using a larger breaker on this wire gauge is a code violation and poses a significant safety risk.
This "3-conductor" cable actually contains four total wires (three insulated and one bare ground):
The 10 AWG conductors are typically solid copper in NM-B configurations, providing excellent "memory" when bending and tucking wires into an electrical box, ensuring they stay in place once shaped.
Proper installation is key to maintaining the integrity of the 600V rating:
