This 10 AWG, 12-conductor unshielded substation control cable is a heavy-duty multi-circuit cable engineered for demanding utility and industrial environments. Built to strict ICEA S-73-532 standards, it features a composite 20/10 PE/PVC insulation system. Because it is unshielded, it is optimized for high-density control circuits, multi-point secondary power feeds, and DC distribution networks where high-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is not required, offering greater flexibility and a simplified termination process.

Key Features of 10/12 Unshielded 20/10 Substation Cable

  • Heavy-Duty 20/10 Composite Insulation: Each of the 12 conductors is insulated with 20 mils of Natural Polyethylene (PE) for primary dielectric strength and low electrical loss, paired with a 10 mil Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) outer skin layer for robust physical protection and color identification.

  • Unshielded Optimization: Without the added bulk and rigidity of a copper tape shield, this multi-conductor cable features a smaller overall outer diameter and tighter bending radius, making it significantly easier to pull through congested conduit runs, cable trays, and complex terminal enclosures.

  • Utility-Grade Durability: Protected by a rugged, flame-retardant, and sunlight-resistant black PVC jacket. It is fully approved for versatile installation paths, including wet or dry conditions, direct burial, open air, cable troughs, or embedded duct banks.

  • High-Ampacity Conductor Base: Features premium Class B concentrically stranded bare copper conductors conforming to ASTM B3 and B8, offering excellent current capacity for multi-circuit control functions and station service power.

Common Applications

  • Substation DC Distribution: Consolidating multiple circuits from battery banks, chargers, and main DC distribution panels to circuit breaker trip coils, alarm panels, and switchgear control busses.

  • Station Service Power & Control: Providing reliable auxiliary AC/DC power and control circuits to transformer cooling fans, motorized disconnect switches, and panel heating elements.

  • Multi-Circuit Control Loops: Ideal for motor-operated switches (MOS), high-current valve actuators, and interlocking networks where multiple voltage signals must be routed across long distances.

  • Industrial Power Distribution: General-purpose multi-conductor control loops and heavy machinery automation in power generation stations, wastewater treatment facilities, and heavy industrial plants.

Conductor Identification: ICEA E-1 Color Code Sequence

  • Black, White, Red, Green, Orange, Blue, White/Black, Red/Black, Green/Black, Orange/Black, Blue/Black, Black/White

Technical Specifications

  • Insulation System: 20 mils PE / 10 mils PVC (Total 30 mils per conductor)

  • Shielding: None (Unshielded)

  • Jacket: Flame-Retardant, Moisture- & Sunlight-Resistant Black PVC

  • Voltage Rating: 600V

  • Temperature Rating: 75°C Wet or Dry

  • Compliance Standards: ICEA S-73-532 / NEMA WC 57, ASTM B3 & B8, RoHS Compliant

Technical Note: Since this cable is unshielded, it should not be placed in the same tray or conduit as sensitive, low-voltage microprocessor-based communication lines or analog sensor loops (SCADA inputs). For high-voltage switchyards prone to severe transient switching arcs, ensure that this cable's routing complies with appropriate physical separation distances to prevent capacitive or inductive coupling onto adjacent signal lines. When implementing the E-1 color code, ensure field technicians cross-reference terminal blocks to avoid using the #4 Green or #2 White conductors as active control legs if your facility reserves those colors exclusively for ground and neutral paths.

AWG, or American Wire Gauge, is the standard system used primarily in North America to measure the diameter of electrical conductors. This system is critical because a wire's size directly impacts its electrical resistance and how much current (ampacity) it can safely carry. A key principle is that the smaller the AWG number, the larger the wire's diameter; for instance, 12 AWG is thicker and can carry more current than 14 AWG. Sizes beyond 0 AWG are referred to as "aught" (e.g., 1/0, 2/0). Selecting the correct AWG is essential for safe electrical installations, preventing overheating, and minimizing voltage drop.
Voltage drop is the natural reduction in electrical potential that occurs as current travels through a circuit, from the power source to a device. This happens because all wires inherently have resistance, which converts some electrical energy into heat, leading to a loss of voltage. While minor voltage drop is normal, excessive amounts can cause problems like dimming lights, slow or overheating motors, and erratic electronic behavior. It can also lead to higher energy consumption and, in severe cases, create safety hazards due to overheating wires. Key factors influencing voltage drop include the wire's length and thickness (gauge), the amount of current flowing through it, and the quality of electrical connections.
In electrical wiring, amps (amperes) measure the rate of electrical current flow. Think of it as the volume of electricity moving through the wire at any given time. Crucially, every electrical wire has an ampacity rating, which is the maximum current it can safely carry continuously without overheating. Exceeding a wire's ampacity can lead to insulation damage and fire hazards, highlighting why proper wire sizing based on expected amperage is vital for safe electrical systems.
A wire's ampacity, or its safe current-carrying capacity, changes with temperature primarily because of two factors. First, the electrical resistance of copper and aluminum wires increases as they get hotter, causing them to generate more heat when current flows. Second, every wire's insulation has a maximum temperature limit; exceeding this can cause degradation and safety hazards. Therefore, in hotter environments, a wire must carry less current to avoid exceeding its insulation's temperature rating. This ensures the wire remains safe and functional, preventing overheating and potential failures.
We aim to provide authentic, precise images of each wire; however, with various product variations, it can be challenging. In such instances, we focus on showcasing the fundamental design. Always refer to the product specifications rather than relying solely on images.
