1/0 Diesel Locomotive Cable (DLO) is an extra-flexible 2000V single-conductor industrial power cable engineered for heavy feeder runs, main generator leads, and high-vibration industrial power distribution. Constructed with finely stranded tinned copper, heavy-duty EPR insulation, and a pressure-extruded Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE) jacket, it delivers maximum flexibility, vibration resistance, and chemical protection.

Dual-rated as Type RHH/RHW-2 (600V and 2000V) under UL 44 and Tray Cable rated (TC) for 1/0 AWG and larger, this cable handles dynamic equipment movement while remaining fully code-compliant for permanent cable tray and raceway installations.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Corrosion-Resistant Tinned Copper: Built with high-strand tinned annealed copper (ASTM B-33/B-172) to prevent conductor oxidation, ensure long-lasting terminations, and provide superior flexibility for pulling through complex tray networks and conduits.

  • Premium EPR Insulation: Thermoset Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR) insulation delivers excellent dielectric strength, handling continuous 2000V electrical loads without thermal breakdown, cracking, or softening.

  • Ultra-Rugged CPE Outer Jacket: Heavy-duty Black Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE) thermosetting compound provides extreme resistance to oil, grease, petrochemical solvents, ozone, weather, and continuous UV exposure.

  • Tray Cable (TC) & Dual-Rated Compliance: Certified as 2kV DLO for flexible machinery leads, dual-rated as 600V/2000V RHH/RHW-2 under UL 44, and rated for Cable Tray (CT) use in sizes 1/0 AWG and larger.

  • Sub-Zero Cold Flexibility: Rated for -40°C low-temperature flexibility, preventing jacket cracking or stiffening during dynamic payouts and cold-weather pulls.

  • Custom Cut-to-Length: Wire America supplies 1/0 AWG DLO cable cut by the foot with zero cut fees, saving you material waste and jobsite prep time.

1/0 AWG Diesel Locomotive Cable (DLO) is a flexible 2000V single-conductor power cable engineered for high-amperage, high-vibration power distribution. Common uses include main generator leads, commercial solar DC feeder trunks, mobile power distribution skids, marine auxiliaries, and mining machinery feeds where standard rigid building wire is difficult to route.

Single conductor 1/0 AWG DLO cable has a maximum continuous ampacity rating of 260 Amps in free air (based on a 90°C conductor temperature and 30°C ambient per NEC Table 310.17). Standard NEC derating factors apply when grouping conductors inside conduit or cable trays.

While both DLO (Diesel Locomotive) cable and Welding cable feature high-strand copper for extreme flexibility, they are engineered for completely different applications and code requirements:

  • Voltage & Dielectric Strength: DLO cable features heavy-duty Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR) insulation rated for continuous 2000V power delivery. Standard welding cable is designed only for low-voltage dedicated welding leads (typically 100V to 600V max) and lacks the dielectric strength required for high-voltage industrial feeders.
  • National Electrical Code (NEC®) Compliance: DLO cable is dual-rated as Type RHH/RHW-2 under UL 44 and Cable Tray (CT) approved. This makes it fully code-compliant for permanent building wiring, conduits, raceways, and open cable trays. Welding cable is not approved by the NEC for permanent premises wiring, power distribution feeders, or cable tray installations.
  • Corrosion Protection: DLO cable utilizes tinned annealed copper stranding to prevent conductor oxidation, rust, and termination degradation in humid or chemically harsh environments. Welding cable typically uses bare, untinned copper strands.
  • Flame & Environmental Ratings: DLO cable carries rigorous heavy-duty listings, including MSHA flame resistance, IEEE 1202/FT4 flame testing, -40°C cold flexibility, and continuous sunlight/oil resistance. Standard welding cable generally lacks tray cable flame listings and heavy environmental certifications.

Yes. 1/0 DLO cable is dual-rated as Type RHH/RHW-2 under UL 44 (600V and 2000V) and c(UL) RW90 (1kV). This dual-rating allows it to be installed as permanent code-compliant wire in approved raceways and conduits.

Per manufacturer specifications, the minimum bend radius for 1/0 AWG DLO is 4 times the overall diameter (4 x OD) for fixed installations and 6 times the overall diameter (6 x OD) for flexible applications. Based on its nominal outer diameter of 0.671 inches, the actual minimum bend radius is 2.68 inches for fixed bends and 4.03 inches for flexible routing.

Yes. It features a heavy-duty thermoset Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE) jacket rated for -40°C extreme sub-zero cold flexibility. It is fully resistant to UV sunlight, ozone, moisture, oil, grease, and aggressive solvents.

1/0 AWG DLO cable utilizes 273 strands of 24 AWG (273/#24) tinned annealed copper. This extra-fine stranding profile gives the cable superior flexibility and tight bending radii without work-hardening or strand failure.

Because DLO cable uses flexible fine-strand tinned copper, standard mechanical set-screw lugs designed for stiff commercial building wire can shear individual strands. It is strongly recommended to use high-strand compression lugs or wire ferrules to ensure full strand containment, a secure crimp, and minimal contact resistance.

Wire America supplies a complete inventory of Diesel Locomotive Cable (DLO) ranging from 14 AWG up to 1111 MCM. Orders are supplied by the foot with zero cut fees, or shipped on full master reels.
